About Our School

St. Bartholomew's School was founded in 1466 and is proud of its ancient tradition. It is now an 11-18 Comprehensive School of 1630 students with a Sixth Form of 350 serving Newbury, a wide area of West Berkshire and the Hampshire/Wiltshire borders. The School is academically successful. Each year there will be 15+ Oxbridge candidates with many obtaining places.

about st barts schoolSince September 2002 the school was designated a Business & Enterprise College, by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust. This has been a central contribution to the school's development and creativity.

The School is currently housed on two attractive sites which are only approximately 200 metres apart on the south side of Newbury.

Years 7-11 are based mainly at Luker, (the former site of the Newbury County Girls' Grammar School), and the Sixth Form mainly at Wormestall (previously the site of the Boys' Grammar School). The School benefits from excellent teaching and resources as well as extensive playing fields.

In November 2006 St. Bart’s was chosen by West Berkshire Council to benefit from a multi million pound investment of central Government funding for redevelopment. The School will be rebuilt within the boundaries of its existing site and will provide modern, well equipped and high tech teaching facilities to benefit the school community.

It is hoped that all teaching will take place in the new purpose built accommodation during 2010. All the new buildings are on our existing playing field and as a result, with the exception of some PE activities, the programme will not disrupt teaching and learning.

Out of classroom activities at St. Bartholomew's are many and varied, and are regarded as central to the student's education. They offer students considerable opportunity for learning and enjoyment. Many competitions and activities are House based, and the School enjoys a thriving life of Music and Drama. Sporting traditions are very strong in the School with excellent facilities, an exceptional range of teams and a strong fixture list.

Newbury is a market town which has grown considerably in recent years. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside and housing, though relatively expensive, is plentiful. The School is well regarded locally, and has strong links with the community and the Old Newburian Association.
