The Sixth Form
Introduction
St
Bartholomew's Sixth Form is an integral part of a very successful
and highly regarded 11-18 Comprehensive School. Students are
based in the Wormestall site between Buckingham and Enborne
Roads, with their own dedicated Tutors and House staff. This
enables the Sixth Form to benefit from rules and customs that
are more appropriate to post-16 students.
At the same time, Sixth Formers play an integral part in the main school, with access
to all the School's facilities as well as opportunities to mentor younger pupils in subject
lessons, music and drama activities and to develop important life skills.
In addition to access to excellent specialist facilities and the staff of a large school,
Sixth Form students have their own dedicated study area in the library, computer facilities,
careers services, common rooms and refectory.
With one of the largest Sixth Forms in the country, St Bart's has the resources to offer
exceptional educational opportunities to anyone in the Newbury area.
GCSE, AS and A Level results are consistently high (50% of A Level grades were A/B in 2007) and A Level results show excellent value-added from GCSE. The range of extra curricular opportunities is exceptional. . Further details are provided on the CD- ROM prospectus and accompanying Courses guide.
In May 2007 Ofsted judged the Sixth Form to be ‘outstanding’
Making a choice
St Bart's Sixth Form is open to everyone in
the 16-19 age group. There are no formal
entry requirements. To study at St Bart's you
need only to:
- Choose courses appropriate to your qualifications
- Have a positive attitude to study
- Accept the School's rules and customs
Points to consider
The main aim of St Bart's Sixth Form is to
enable students to improve their academic
qualifications while developing self-reliance and personal maturity. Before you commit
yourself to staying on at a school for another
one, two or possibly three years beyond the
minimum leaving age, there are a number of
points that you should consider:
- Sixth Form education is not compulsory.
At the end of Year 11 you may feel that you
would prefer to get a job or study at a college of further education. It is worth
thinking carefully about your decision, as it
may affect your future very considerably
- St Bart's Sixth Form offers much more
than academic work. Apart from the
stimulus of general studies courses,
voluntary and recreational activities
and a programme of visiting speakers for
the Upper Sixth, St Bart's offers a wide
range of intellectual, cultural, sporting and
social activities. We hope that all Sixth
Formers will make their individual
contribution to this valuable tradition and
in turn derive considerable benefit from it.
- The Sixth Form has its privileges and
responsibilities. If you enter St Bart's Sixth
Form, we shall expect you to show a
sensible and co-operative attitude to your
work, to your fellow students and staff and
to the School's rules and customs.
That said, if you wish to continue your
education in a stimulating, mature and
friendly atmosphere, you will find at St Bart's
excellent opportunities to make the very most
of your abilities. The choice is yours.
The main Sixth Form Open Evening is held annually in November. Dates are publicised in the local press.
