Course Description

GCSE Textiles Technology covers a wide range of topics which encourages students to be creative while developing their understanding of the world of fashion and textiles.  Over the two years of the course you will develop a whole range of creative designing and making skills, technical knowledge and understanding relating to textiles products and invaluable transferable skills such as problem solving and time management.

Subject content includes:

Learning how to use a wide range of decorative and construction methods and then using this knowledge to respond to a variety of design briefs.

Textiles Technology enables students to develop a working knowledge of a wide range of textiles materials and components appropriate to modelling, prototyping and manufacturing. Students will learn about design and market influences, processes and manufacture, environmental issues and the use of ICT in relation to the manufacturing of material products.

Teaching and Learning Styles:

A variety of learning styles will be used during the two years.  Theoretical work will be taught through individual & group based research, design briefs, discussion, debate and presentations.  The fashion and textile industry is constantly changing and therefore students will use a wide range of media to keep abreast of developments.


Controlled assessment (Coursework) 60%

Students choose a design brief and research, develop and make a product, the folder work can be presented in an A3 booklet or e portfolio. Previous GCSE products have included; skirts, jackets, onsies, children’s wall hangings, activity mats and pyjamas.

The high proportion of coursework allows hard working students to gain excellent grades, with the examination playing a slightly lesser role.

Final Examination:  40%

Examination – at the end of the two years, the examination tests all of the theoretical information studied during the course.


 Textiles Technology is taught in mixed ability groups.
