PE (KS3)

In Year 7, 8 and 9 students are taught in single sex groups with some mixed ability and some set groups. The boys groups are called 1 for the top set and have two parallel lower ability sets called 2a and 2B. The girls groups are called X for the top set and have two parallel lower ability sets called Y and Z. All classes cover the same curriculum.

The range and content of the curriculum encompasses:

  • Use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual game (for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounder’s, rugby and tennis).
  • Development of technique and improving their performance in other competitive sports (for example athletics and gymnastics).
  • Analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
  • Take part in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs.

Students will learn about the statements listed above by completing units of work in Gymnastics, Games (invasion, net and wall, striking) and Athletic Activities. They have two one hour lessons a week. At the end of each eight-hour module they will be given an attainment level and a progress grade.

At the start of year seven we use a rigorous approach during the first module of term.  We use this to get to know the students and to place them into the correct PE set.   We regularly review PE sets and students are moved up and down over the course of the year depending on progress.  This is repeated throughout Key Stage 3.

Over the 4 weeks girls will do at least 1 Gym, 1HRF, 2 Lax, 2 Netball and 1 Hockey lesson.

Over the 4 weeks boys will do at least 2 Rugby, 2 Football, 1 HRF and 1 Striking and Fielding lesson.

In addition to these practical assessment lessons we also give opportunities to consider student involvement in representative teams to date as well as local clubs.

The rotation for each year group and the map for their activities follow.
