78 St Bart’s students received a Gold certificate for achieving a top 10% score in their respective categories and therefore are now invited to participate in the Oxford University Computing Challenge (OUCC). The OUCC is taking place between 15 – 19th January 2024. This event encourages students to develop their skills further and produce programmed solutions to computational thinking problems. We wish them all the best!

The St Bart’s Whole School Quiz 2023

December 14, 2023

This general knowledge, multiple choice quiz is sat by every student (and lots of staff) every year.  The scores from every student count towards the House Championship.  This year, Patterson are the winning House.

The students with the top score in each year group were: Georgina Rushmer-Wilson (7D1), Klenam Agodzo (8P1), Lucas Vrolijk (9D2), Amos Fitch (10P1), Abi Hamblin (11P1) and for the Sixth Form, Will Heslop (12D7) and Alex Scourfield (13E3).

We publish the quiz in BartholoNews every year and many St Bart’s families do this quiz over the festive period.

St Bart’s Supports Newbury Weekly News Over 80s Parcel Fund

December 14, 2023

On Friday 9 December, St Bart’s Year 7 and Sixth Form students took part in the Newbury Weekly News Over 80s Parcel Fund, supported by Greenham Trust. The initiative, which has run since 1897,  saw schools and community groups come together to hand out nearly 2,000 Christmas goodie bags as a seasonal thank you to local elderly residents.

Our Sixth Formers, Avni, Isabella, Callum, Sid, Harry, Yuvaa, Laura, Mikey, Jemima and Jennifer helped to unpack the parcels from the delivery vans with Mr Wilder. Whilst accompanied by Mr Bandy and Mrs Cox, our Year 7 students, Maddison, Pranav, Poppy, Vinayak, James, Esther, Gabriel and Hannah, headed out to make the first deliveries to the happy recipients’ doors!

Mr Bandy, Assistant Headteacher, said “We had such an enjoyable morning, spreading some Christmas cheer! Community is at the heart of St Bart’s and it is fantastic that our students were able to take part in this important initiative. I was extremely proud of how our students represented St Bart’s and it was great to see the generations chatting together and enjoying this special time of year.”

U16 Football

December 13, 2023

Our U16 girls’ football team secured a hard fought victory against Oxford High in the 4th round of the English Schools’ Cup. The girls went 1-0 down extremely early on but battled hard to go in at half time 2-1 up with goals from Carys (a fantastic volley!) and Ellie who nipped in at the back post. A fantastic defensive effort in the second half, with some great saves from Matilda, led to us holding on to the win. A special shout out to Evie and Eleanor who ran the line and did a fantastic job!

Well done to all girls involved and bring on the next round!

Year 11 Students Get ‘Real Life’ Interview Experience

December 12, 2023

Following the KS3 Careers Fair, the school also held our annual Year 11 Interview Day. The event offers Year 11 students a ‘real-life’ opportunity to practice their interview technique and etiquette with representatives from the world of work.

Prior to the day, students spent time in their PDP sessions, examining skills required for work, researching career choices, producing CVs and letters of application. On the day itself, each student benefitted from an individual mock interview and feedback on their performance from interviewers. The experience is designed to help prepare students for future pathways, whether this be Sixth Form, alternative further education, an apprenticeship or employment.

The event is supported by the Education and Business Partnership West Berkshire, who work in partnership with businesses to improve the employability skills of young people. More than 30 business volunteers gave their time generously and organisations involved included AWE, Barclays, Gardner Leader, Handelsbanken, Microsoft, OpenText, New College Swindon, Priors Count Foundation, RAL Space, Sky, Shoosmiths, Splunk Vodafone and West Berkshire Council. A huge thanks to all involved.

Year 7 Rugby

December 11, 2023

The Year 7 boys’ rugby team played their final match of the season, against Park House under lights at NRFC.

St Bart’s won the first half two tries to one, and scored again in the second half, but Park House won by four tries to three by the final whistle.

Every St Bart’s player played really well, and the boys are looking forward to a rematch next year. Player of the match was captain, Zack Shore.

Year 7 Christmas Party

December 11, 2023

Earlier this week, we held our Year 7 Christmas Party. As we draw to the end of our Year 7s’ first term at St Bart’s, it was a great chance for students to celebrate all their many successes from the last term, whether this was in lessons, clubs, the many school competitions, making new friends or even just conquering their timetable and finding their way around school!

Year 7 took over the school hall and were resplendent in their Christmas jumpers and sparkles. They were joined by many of our House staff, Year 7 tutors and our Assistant Headteacher (KS3) Miss Thorne. Students enjoyed some great party food and music was provided by Mr Edens on the DJ Decks. Thank you to the many House Captains and Barts Ambassadors and staff who organised the party and enabled it to take place. It was great to see everyone having fun on the dance floor.

We hope all our Year 7s had a good time and are enjoying being part of the St Bart’s community.
