The Year 9 Boys’ Football team played against Forest School in the first round of the County Cup. It was a fairly even first half with the score line being 1-0 to Forest at half time. The second half was again highly competitive with St Bart’s starting the stronger team, creating good patterns and working good goal scoring opportunities, but failing to put the ball in the back of the net. Going into the last five minutes the score was 3-1 to Forest. St Bart’s managed to get one back to make the score 3-2. However, despite working hard to get another goal, Forest were clinical on the counter attack and from pieces and the score finished 6-2. The score line definitely flattered Forest, but the game today was won in both boxes. Forest were more clinical and defended well in key moments. Goal scorers were Sean and Jacob. Player of the match was James for his great all round play.
Lights, camera, action – it’s time for House Film 2!
On Thursday 1 February at 6.30pm in the Hall, the Film & Media Department will once again be rolling out the red carpet for students, parents and teachers, as we gather for a very special evening of film premieres and popcorn!
Since September, over 90 St Bart’s students across all year groups have immersed themselves in the world of film to create eight exciting shorts for our viewing. House teams have been challenged to produce a Junior and Senior entry, with Year 10 supporting students from Years 7-9 (Junior category) and Year 13 leading a team of Year 12s and 11s (Senior category).
This has involved students turning their hand to script-writing, acting, camerawork, lighting, sound, set, costume, hair and make-up. BartholoNews spoke to just some of the students involved”¦
Jenny and Laura (Year 12: Patterson Senior); “Our entry is ‘Night Owl’ – A masked killer follows their victim to a suburban home but what will happen when their paths cross?!. So much work and time has gone into our entry. We’ve been directing and focused on post production and it has required a high amount of planning and organising. It’s worth it though, as it is such a creative opportunity to be able to be in complete control of your project. We just know it will be the most rewarding experience to watch our film on the big screen. We want to thank Mr Evans for all his technical support, Mr Roberts for organising everything and Mr Keetch for moral support!”
Elizabeth and Ellie (Year 10: Curnock Junior); “Our entry is ‘The Heist’ – Four House heroes come together to steal what is rightfully theirs – get ready for a heist to remember. We got involved in the first ever House Film as actors last year and we just loved it! Now we are back and directing. Our film is very ambitious and we have a big team, which brings its own challenges. We really enjoyed the casting and the school have been so brilliant with all our requests – they even let us blackout a whole block after school and film on the roof! House Film is a lot of work but if we win it will be so worth it!”
The films will be judged by two St Bart’s Alumni: Reece Broughton, Studio Production Manager at Pinewood Group Limited and Holly Choules, a multi-skilled operator working with Zest4.tv, the production company. The stakes are high, as the winners and runners-up will be rewarded with their own film screened at Newbury Vue on 27 February, whilst the winning Y13 and Y10 House Film Captains will also get 3-month free subscription to MUBI, an art-house film streaming platform.
Last year, Davis were crowned the first ever St Bart’s House Film champions. Will they do the double? Or will the crown pass to Curnock, Evers or Patterson? We can’t wait for this particular twist in the plot!
Don’t forget to book your tickets – just £1.50 and now available on Parent Pay.
Our U13 girls played the next round of cup fixtures away at The Piggott School. Both sides started very strong with a lot of shots on target but no one was able to find the back of the net in the first half.
The second half started fast but Bart’s made the better start and took the lead with Alice putting the ball past their keeper. We stayed strong but unfortunately Piggott managed to get a last-minute goal from a corner which took the score to 1-1 at full time.
Ten minutes of extra time was agreed but again both teams played so well that neither team scored, which meant… penalties. We won the coin toss, which meant we chose to take first, so Eva stepped forward. Penalty scored. 2-1. Piggott penalty – scored 2-2. Alice stepped forward to take her penalty and scored 3-2. Piggott penalty – miss.
Freya was our final penalty taker and scoring this would secure us the win, so a lot of pressure. Freya stepped up with confidence and hit the ball with so much power that their keeper could not save it
Final score was 4-2 and we are onto the next round of the cup! Well done to Eva who was awarded player of the match. Amazing work girls!
Thank you Mrs Clare for accompanying the students on this event. Congratulations and well done to all the students that took part.

On Tuesday 8 January, 12 Year 12 and 13 Performing Arts students went to the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton for a performance of the new touring production of ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’. We were lucky enough to have fantastic seats in the stalls, which meant we had a great view of the action. This musical tells the story of Jamie New, a young Year 11 student who decides to attend his school prom in drag. Jamie is 16 and lives on a council estate in Sheffield. At school he doesn’t quite fit in. He is terrified about the future and his place in it. Supported by his brilliant loving mum and surrounded by his friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight.Along with the lively upbeat score and the live band visible on stage, the production also included a clever set design, fabulous costumes and moody lighting. We all had a fantastic evening and the performance has helped us consider dance and drama within a musical theatre setting and will help inspire us when we are choreographing and devising in our practical coursework.
Sixth Form Performing Arts Students
On Wednesday 17 January, Ella, Eva, Laura, Astrid and Jemima (Year 12 Students) joined staff and volunteers at the West Berkshire Museum, as Newbury ran its own Digital Collection Day. The team at the museum met with members of the Newbury community and recorded war-related stories, memories, photographs, diaries, letters and other mementos and uploaded these to an online archive.
Their Finest Hour is a University of Oxford project that aims to empower local communities to collect and digitally archive the everyday stories and objects of the Second World War that have been passed down from generation to generation. The stories and objects of the men, women, and children who were part of the 1939-1945 generation are being lost. Many of those affected have since passed their stories and objects on to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom now act as custodians of their relatives’ remarkable legacy. The photographs, letters, diaries, medals and other artefacts symbolise the experiences of the wartime generation and the initiative aims to preserve and value this heritage before it is lost to posterity.
Gemma Taylor, Culture & Libraries Volunteer Officer at West Berkshire Council, said of the students: “They are an absolute credit to the school and should be very proud of how they presented themselves. They were very professional and engaged well with everyone. I do hope they enjoyed the experience and that they are proud that they helped preserve history yesterday.”
Thank you to Ella, Eva, Laura, Astrid and Jemima for giving their time and for representing the school. All digitised stories and objects will be free to access here from 6 June 2024.
