Patterson Chalks up 10 Guide Dogs!

March 28, 2024

The Patterson House charity is Guide Dogs, and this week they were visited by their ninth sponsored dog, Luker. Luker, who is now 18 months old, was accompanied by Charlotte, her trainer, and she treated the students to a display of her skills. Luker showed how she can find empty chairs so that, once matched with a blind person, she can help them find seats on buses or at busy doctors’ surgeries.

Luker also demonstrated how she can find crossing boxes to enable safe crossing of roads. She behaved beautifully and was rewarded by playing with her toys. She is still in training but is working hard, Charlotte says Luker is very chilled!

It was also announced, that thanks to the hard work of Patterson students, we have now raised another £2500, meaning we can sponsor a tenth dog. This is such a massive achievement – well done Patterson! Look out for us in the Newbury Weekly News.

Year 12 Trip to Krakow

March 28, 2024

A group of our Year 12 students, accompanied by Mr Owen, Miss May and Mrs Lane are in Krakow, Poland. The 3-day trip is part of our Beacon School Programme, in conjunction with the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education, which enhances teaching and learning about the Holocaust.  The visit will include a visit to Kazimierz, Krakow (considering the impact of the occupation), a trip to Galicia Museum to meet with a Holocaust Survivor and a visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum.  Students will also visit Rynek Podgorski to learn more about the former ghetto, living conditions and forced labour.

Mikey Cloete is one of the students travelling to Poland, he said: “I look forward to this trip as I believe it will be highly educational as well as interesting. The trip has been planned to give us a good balance of Holocaust focus, whilst allowing us breaks from some of the most intense and serious educational experiences. I personally decided to go on this trip as I have always held a great interest around WW2 and developing a greater understanding of the deeper topics around the Holocaust. I hope to gain personal experiences of being in these areas and to expand my own knowledge. I believe everyone will gain a great educational, personal and emotional affect from this trip.”

In the months leading up to the visit, the students involved with the programme have had the opportunity to attend a series of school seminars, led by teaching staff, and covering topics such as The Nuremburg Trials, literature around the Holocaust and pre-war Jewish life. Mikey, alongside fellow Year 12 students, Sophie and Vanja, has been chosen as Beacon Captain. The role will involve contributing to ideas around the Beacon School Programme and how it is delivered across school, as well as sharing their own experiences and lessons from the programme to the wider school community. The students have plans to lead a school assembly on their experiences following their return from Poland.

Romeo & Juliet for Year 9

March 28, 2024

On Friday last week, the touring theatre company, Box Clever, made their third visit to school this year. This time they were performing ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to Year 9. This fast-paced, exciting performance really captivated students and brought the play to life. Students were eager to get involved in the workshop opportunity afterwards, and it was great to hear them speaking (shouting) lines as the love triangle between Paris, Romeo and Juliet followed its devastating, but predictable course.

Greenham Common Trust Youth Distribution Meeting

March 28, 2024

Last year, we reported that St Bart’s students had been given the opportunity to join in the Greenham Common Trust’s Youth Distribution Committee. The trust has supported over 5000 local good causes and distributed over £71 Million since their inception in 1997. This committee consists of young people from local secondary schools and groups. They review projects and agree how best to award grants. Archie (13D5) and Luisa (13C2) have been invited to take part again recently.

Luisa said, “Being invited again to the Greenham Trust Youth Distribution Meeting was great. We, as a team, allocated funding to various charities, parish councils, schools and towns, giving those who received funding a chance to support those more vulnerable and improve their area. Everyone listened to each other and shared ideas and experiences that were vital to distributing resources to the organisations. It was a brilliant experience and thank you to the Sixth Form Team for the opportunity to attend and take part in these meetings and discussions.”

Managing Exam Stress

March 28, 2024

On Tuesday 19 March, we hosted an information evening on ‘managing exam stress’, which was well attended by parents and students. There were presentations from Time 2 Talk and TellMi focusing on how young people can understand and manage their anxieties and how we can help manage stress levels, specifically during examination periods.

Thank you to all who attended. If you weren’t able to attend click here to view the presentation which includes the slides from TellMi.

End of Term Football Round Up

March 28, 2024

U13 Football

Year 8 Football

Year 11 Football

 U13 Football

Well done to the U13 girls’ football team who reached the semi-final of the County Cup. Unfortunately they lost in the semi-final at home to Maiden Erlegh School.

It was a great match between two very strong teams. We scored two early goals and were 2-1 up at half time. But we could not hold on and the game ended 2-2 and we had to play extra time. Both teams had chances to win the game, but extra time ended 0-0. So we had to go to penalties and it wasn’t meant to be for us.

But the team has lots of potential and talent and we know they will go on to do big things in the future. Well done to the whole squad. Well done to Alice who was awarded player of the match.

Year 8 Football

The Year 8 boys’ football team played a league game against a very good Trinity side. The boys were 1-1 at half time but unfortunately lost the game 3-1. Joint player of the match for Rory Tucker (first goal for school) and Rory McLellan.

Year 11 Football

Well done to the Year 11 football team who beat Trinity 2-1. The match was full of good performances, but the players of the match were the back four and Jimmy. Well done to all.

Parent/Carer Survey 2024

March 26, 2024

Each year, we conduct surveys with our key stakeholders. We have recently surveyed all staff and, after Easter, will be sharing a survey with all students. As part of this commitment, we are also very keen to capture your views and to understand more about your experience of the school and, through your eyes, to understand more about your child’s experiences too.

We would be very grateful if you could complete this online survey by the end of this half-term. We will close the survey on Thursday 28th March at 13.00.

Your voice matters

It is important to recognise that we do engage very carefully with data that emerges from our surveys. We generate our School Development Plan each year with close reference to stakeholder responses. With this in mind, it is important to highlight some of the key areas that were identified by parents/carers last year and to indicate some of the ways this has informed our work in 2023-4.

  • We have recently agreed some significant changes to the terminology and colour coding on school reports. We are confident that these changes will address some of the concerns previously raised. The new format will take effect next academic year and we will share details in due course.
  • Informed by parent/carer feedback on the user-friendliness/functionality of our website, we are in the process of planning and developing a new website. This will be responsive on mobile devices and will enable parents/carers and all other visitors to more easily explore and access school information. We are planning to launch in September 2024.
  • Last year’s survey raised some significant queries about the availability of curriculum information. We are confident that the new website will enable us to present information in a clear and accessible format. Planning for the website has prompted a comprehensive review of the curriculum information that we make available to parents/carers.
  • We are also planning to migrate to a new Management Information System in January 2025. This will enable new and more efficient forms of communication with parents.
  • As part of our commitment to listening to parents’/carers’ views, we have been very pleased to host more discussion forums as part of our Parents’ Association meetings. The session on Homework was particularly well-attended and we will continue to look to engage with parents through this route and will promote sessions through Bartholonews.
  • Reading emerged as an area for development from last year’s survey. The promotion of reading through lessons (in all subjects) and through our excellent library has been a key part of our Development Plan this year. We recently invested in a significant piece of software – Reading Plus – that is already having an impact on Y7 students and some other groups across the school. This will remain a priority area for us.

Please share your views with us. It really makes a difference.
