Spanish Immersion Trip

March 14, 2024

Last month, 41 of our Year 10, 11 and 12 students visited Andalucia for a unique opportunity to improve their Spanish and to learn more about Spanish culture through a variety of activities. Each student was paired with a Spanish pen pal before the trip and met them while in Spain

Ella Lecky (12E7) tells us about her experience…

“Our trip to Andalucia was so jam-packed. We got to see so much over the course of the four days, as well as practising our Spanish! On day one we arrived at Malaga and received a tour of the city. We ended the day by visiting the Bronze statue of Picasso (and having an ice cream there!) before arriving in Jaén.

On day two we met our pen pals for the first time, and visited their school to do a variety of activities. This helped us with our communication skills and it was a very enjoyable way for us to practice our Spanish. In the evening, we did a scavenger hunt in Jaén with the pen pals.

Day three was our busiest day! In the morning, we went to the market in Jaén to buy the ingredients for our ‘Masterchef’ competition, it was a perfect opportunity to practice our Spanish in real life situations. After this, we did olive oil tasting. Jaén is the olive oil capital of the world with more olive trees than people! In the afternoon, we visited the 11th century ‘Castillo de Santa Catalina’.

Day four was our final full day. In the morning, we went to the interactive science park museum in Granada. On the way back, we saw the views of Granada. Then in the evening, we had a party with the pen pals before saying goodbye.

On our way back to the airport, on the final day, we visited the Alhambra palace in Granada, one of the most famous sites of Islamic architecture. Overall, the Spanish Immersion trip was a great opportunity for us to not only practice and improve our Spanish, but to get a massive insight into the history and culture of Spain whilst being partnered with somebody of our own age!”

Chinese New Year

March 12, 2024

On 26 February, a group students and Mrs Ndagire spoke to our Year 12 and 13 students about the Chinese New Year in the Sixth Form enrichment assembly.

Chinese New Year (also known as Spring Festival) is a festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. It marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring, and begins on the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February. Celebrations traditionally take place from Chinese New Year’s Eve until the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the year.

Head Student, Callum, spoke about the significance of the Chinese New Year, the lessons it teaches and reflections that it inspires. You can read Callum’s full speech here.

Alumni Awards for Film

March 11, 2024

On Monday 26 February, a select group of enthusiastic Year 12 Film students attended the 10th WJEC / Eduqas Moving Image Awards ceremony, held at the prestigious BFI Southbank, in support of two of last year’s alumni, who were shortlisted for their A Level Media coursework.  We were delighted that Callum Doddington (Warwick) and Harvey Miller (Bournemouth) won their categories, for Best Music Video and Best TV Sequence, respectively, and we followed up the ceremony by networking with prize-winners and judges at a post-awards reception!  Despite an adventurous train journey home, our students came away inspired – we look forward to entering our best work again this year!

The winning videos, along with all House Films, can be seen on the St Bart’s Media & Film Youtube account  Like, subscribe and share!

National Careers Week

March 7, 2024

Our Students Future Careers Start Here! #NCW2024

It’s National Careers Week (NCW), (4-9 March), and so it’s a great time to highlight some of the careers resources and information available to St Bart’s students.

Please do visit our Careers Opportunities website page for some interesting links including:

  • A Parents Guide to National Careers Week, which gives parents a chance to learn more about different careers paths their children/child can take,
  • Articles on types of Apprenticeship available, the pros and cons of University and T-Levels explained,
  • A Job Profile of the ‘best job in the UK (according to job search site, Indeed).

At St Bart’s our career programme is supported by the careers company Adviza. Adviza are running a series of industry webinars in the coming weeks, including Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiography, Film & TV, Construction, Early Years Childcare and Education, and Interior Design. If these webinars are of interest to you or your student, please do visit the Adviza Events page for more information.

St Bart’s are also very fortunate to have a Level 6 qualified careers Adviza Advisor at the school. If your child requires a priority appointment with Mrs Amanda Gill, the careers advisor, requests can be made via email to Mrs Seward, dseward@stbarts.co.uk.

Our School Library is also a great place to start exploring careers, with brochures, booklets and leaflets to browse and access to the eCLIPS site, another Adviza resource which offers information on over 1400 jobs. This week the Library are running a NCW careers quiz for Years 7-10. The aim of the quiz is to get students exploring the Careers section in the Library and the online careers support that is available to them.

One such online resource is Unifrog – the Destination Platform that we use in school. All our students have access to Unifrog and it enables them to explore careers, university and apprenticeship information, complete self-assessment tests to identify next steps or possible careers and to complete CVs, UCAS personal statements and apprenticeship applications. It also enables students to create an ongoing record of key achievements and activities, which are regularly reviewed with their tutors. Please do encourage students to log-in and demonstrate the site to you.

Finally, St Bart’s arrange a number of events throughout the year as part of our Careers Programme. This includes an Interview Skills Day for Year 11 and KS3 Careers Fair and Enrichment Talks for Sixth Form. If you work for an organisation or business who would like to inspire the next generation of employees by supporting these events, please do get in touch by contacting our Career Lead, Mrs Seward – dseward@stbarts.co.uk. Thank you!

Curnock & Patterson House Evening

March 7, 2024

Forget the West End, as the Curnock & Patterson House Evening rolled into town for one night only and delighted both families and students alike!  Dynamic dancers, soulful singers, cracking comedy, melodic music and bags of talent abounded on the night – all ably compered by our Hosting House Captains.

Our staff sketch this year, “Barts Budget Masked Singer” gave rise to lots of audience participation and hilarity (well done to the Year 7s for singing along to “I’m Just Ken”!!)

Drinks and snacks were served on the night by our team of Year 11 Ambassadors and helpers, and a raffle table laden with prizes also helped the night along. The evening was a great success, and we raised a total of nearly £870, which will be split between Curnock’s House Charity, Newbury Cancer Care, and Patterson’s House Charity, Guide Dogs.

This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, so we are really grateful for everyone who came along and supported us – thank you!  Massive shout outs also to our brilliant performers, House Captains, Ambassadors, helpers, backstage, Tech Team and Mr Weller and everyone else who helped us – you are amazing!

Year 8 Netball

March 5, 2024

The Year 8’s took part in the second round of the netball league at Kennet School. The A Team had a fantastic win against a strong St Gabriel’s School team, beating them 15-10. They then came up against Park House School and lost, 5-10, in a very competitive game. Eva M was awarded best player in both matches.

The B’s played a couple of friendly matches against The Willink School and Park House School B, winning both of those. They then faced St Gabriel’s A in a league match and tried really hard to get on the score sheet, but St Gabriel’s ran away with the win. Best players were awarded to Ellie and Neve.

Year 7 Football

March 5, 2024

The Year 7 boys’ Football team beat Kennet School, 7-0, in the league. Players of the match were two of the centre midfielders, Jude and Owen. This was a super team performance in which the boys played with composure and skill beyond their years. Well done!

Paul Inspires Students

March 5, 2024

On Thursday 22 February, we were delighted to welcome Paul Hannaford back to St Bart’s to speak with our Year 8, 10 and 12 students about knife crime and drugs. Paul is an ex-drug addict and offender who turned his life around and now dedicates his time educating young people on drug addition, alcohol, gang life, gun and knife crime, prison life, self-harm and bullying.

Paul’s talks are tailored to each year group and are powerful and emotive, conveying a strong message of the reality of the consequences that can follow poor decisions

You can find out more about Paul’s work here.
