Rugby Update

October 9, 2024

Year 7 Rugby

The Year 7 rugby team had their first games against Trinity School and Park House School. The full squad were brilliant, putting in exceptional performance in both games. They came away 35-0 winners in both games. Player of the match went to Dylan Wilson.

Year 10 Rugby

The Year 10 rugby team hosted Weydon School in the National Vase Competition.

St Bart’s played brilliantly, scoring first, and dominating a lot of possession, making good ground through strong play in the forwards, and the whole team tackled brilliantly.

St Bart’s led at half time and Weydon came back into the game and took the lead, but St Bart’s responded brilliantly to level the scores.

The final score was 17-17. According to the rules of the competition, the away team progresses to the next round. St Bart’s will now progress in the competition, but there is still a route to the final at Twickenham available. Player of the match was Josh Burgess.

KS3 Awards

October 9, 2024

The KS3 Awards Evening took place last week to recognise the effort and determination shown by our current Year 10 students throughout their first three years at St Bart’s. Students were rewarded for their commitment to both subjects and their Houses, and those who have achieved their Gold Awards were also recognised.

The proceedings were ably led by Miss Thorne, Assistant Headteacher, with awards announced by our Heads of Faculties and Subjects, as well as our Heads of House. Presenting students with their Gold Awards was Daisy Hutchinson, Governor, and, in the final presentation, Tricia Ray, Charitable Foundation Trustee, handed out trophies to those students from each House whom received the most nominations. The winners were:

  • Curnock: Alexa Brown
  • Davis: Freya Machon
  • Evers: Oliver Comber
  • Patterson: Millie Taylor

It was fantastic to see so many students celebrated and to see and hear the wonderful support from their families and friends, who enthusiastically applauded every prizewinner.

Oxbridge Alumni Inspire Year 10 Students

October 3, 2024

Last week, we were pleased to be able to offer our Year 10 students, on the Stretch & Challenge programme, an opportunity to take part in a Q&A session with our very own Oxbridge panel. The panel consisted of alumnus Siena Hickmore, who recently graduated from University of Oxford with a degree in History, alumnus Miguel Zeferino who left St Bart’s this summer to start his degree in Engineering with the University of Cambridge and Imogen Ciochon, who is a current St Bart’s Year 13 student and planning to study Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford.

This was a fantastic opportunity for our Year 10s to put their questions to Siena, Miguel and Imogen – students who, not so very long ago, sat where the Year 10s are now sitting and who have first-hand and recent experience of aspiring to, and ultimately successfully achieving, a place/offer for Oxbridge.

Questions included:
· What A Levels did they study?
· What they found hardest about the application process?
· How hopeful they had been about their application?
· What advice they would give their Year 10 self?
· Do you need to appear confident during an application?
· What is it important to include in your application and how do you make it stand out?
· How do you budget at university?
· How much independence do you have in Sixth Form and at University?
· And even, what houses they were/are in? – Siena (Curnock), Miguel (Davis), Imogen (Evers)!

Advice given by our panellists included finding a subject or area that truly interests you, so that you are prepared to work hard and explore beyond the curriculum. They also explained the importance of super-curricular activities, namely researching, engaging and reading around your chosen subject. They advised the students that you can always choose to change to your pathway at some point in your journey and that it isn’t about achieving straight 9s but about demonstrating your passion for your subject/s and how you think around ideas and challenges. We heard about Miguel’s drone that can now ‘almost’ fly after many failed attempts and about Imogen’s earlier life experience that sparked her desire to learn more about how brains work. Siena also spoke about life at Oxford and the independence you have in your study and daily life.

We hope the Year 10s who took part were inspired to start thinking about where their own interests could take them. We’d like to extend our grateful thanks to Siena, Miguel and Imogen for taking the time to engage with those following in their footsteps.

European Day of Languages

October 3, 2024

On Thursday 26 September, it was the European Day of Languages. At St Bart’s, in the MFL Faculty, we like to celebrate all languages all week! We have had a lovely week celebrating the richness and diversity that learning different languages brings. Year 8 and Year 9 had an assembly to show how languages can open doors to new opportunities and how much it can enhance your professional profile if you have a language on your CV. We also explored our general knowledge about customs and traditions in other countries via a tutor time quiz. The canteen celebrated by preparing dishes from around the world with the Mexican enchiladas being the firm favourite I think! Year 7 and Year 8 students created their flags to show the differences in cultures of the languages they are learning here at Bart’s or shared the culture of the language that they speak at home. The flags joined together to make a wonderful bunting that certainly brightens the MFL corridor, making it a vibrant and welcoming space to enter. At the Open Evening, the Year 6 parents and students voted for their favourite and I am pleased to let you know the winners were:

Runners up:

Matilda E (7C3)

Matilda P (7C3)

Aanya (7C3)

Michelle (7D2)

Tilly (7D3)

A huge thank you to all the students who took part in the competition. Also, a huge thank you to the parents who support Languages and help us promote the celebration of diversity and empathy that comes from understanding different languages and cultures.

St Bart’s Scoops Sports Awards

October 3, 2024

We are delighted to announce that several St Bart’s students and a member of staff have been awarded West Berkshire Schools Sports Awards. They were nominated in the Summer Term in a variety of categories and then shortlisted and invited to attend the awards evening where the winners of the categories would be announced.

The evening was opened with a special welcome from Maxine Smiles Cooke, School Sports Network Manager, and then followed by an eye watering performance from Felix Clements who was a Breakdancing semi-finalist on last year’s Britain’s Got Talent.

Invitees were also privileged to hear an inspirational talk from Lesley Owusu who represented GB at World, Commonwealth and European Stages in the 400m.

The presentation of awards followed with plenty to celebrate.
Congratulations to the following students and team who thoroughly deserve their awards, presented by Felix Clements and Lesley Owusu, for outstanding performances and commitment to their sport and leadership throughout last year.

Sports Performer of the Year: Beth Maclean (11D3)
Beth was highly commended and presented with a trophy for her outstanding netball achievements, which include her selection to the Surrey Storm short squad, competing at the School Games in Loughborough and winning a gold medal.

Beth also achieved very highly in athletics where she achieved excellent results in the 800m and javelin and qualified to represent the County.

FA Footballer of the Year: Isla Clare (11D2)
Isla Clare was highly commended and presented with a trophy for her outstanding achievements in Football. She played for Swindon and later in the season was offered a 1-year contract with Chelsea U16s, which is a fantastic achievement. We all wish you good luck for this year and future years ahead.

Young Leader of the Year: Amelie Goodwin (11C1)
Amelie Goodwin won this award for her excellent leadership skills and dedication to supporting numerous after school clubs and festivals, including School Games opportunities and support in primary schools. She has been an inspiration and is an excellent role model.

FA Football Team of the Year: U16 Girls Football Team
Our U16 Girls Football Team won this award due to their hugely successful season which included getting through to the last 16 of the English Schools Cup and County Cup finalists.

Huge congratulations to them all, they should be very proud of their achievements.

Last, but not least, Mrs Leach, Teacher of PE, won an Outstanding Contribution to the Partnership Award for her work as a School Sports Co-Ordinator. Head of Department Physical Education, Miss Ostinelli, said “We’re thrilled that Mrs Leach’s work has been recognised with this award. She has worked tirelessly to promote participation in sport for all students by organising alternative PE co-curricular activities, working with feeder primary schools and developing opportunities for student leadership in PE. She’s an integral part of the team here at St Bart’s and inspires colleagues and students alike. Her award is very much deserved.”

1st XI cricket: ONA Report and Summer Review

October 1, 2024

With the county season rolling into its final, weather-affected week (Surrey having already won the title – again), it’s about time belatedly to report on our match against the Old Newburians Association (ONA) last term, and some of our players’ exploits over the summer holidays.

This was the first ONA game when students who’d recently represented the school were able to turn out for the opposition, and it was great to welcome back Messrs Crouch, Greenwood, Delavere, Rutt and Butler, who have contributed so much to our endeavours lately. Unsurprisingly, under the avuncular, exacting eye of ONA captain and Falkland supremo Graham Beal, they raised their fielding levels to new heights (!) in a low-scoring but competitive game that the alumnae eventually won by four wickets.
School captain, Seb, strode out to bat averaging over 50 for us this season, so it was inevitable that the curse of the opening batters that has beset this fixture for the past three years would strike now. Callum Johnson duly had him caught behind for a duck, but the quality of Seb’s batting has never been in doubt, exemplified by the fact that he averaged over 40 in his first full season for Falkland men’s 1st XI this year. With runs proving hard to come by, St Bart’s made it to 36-3 off 10 overs before talismanic all-rounder Jimmy took the initiative. One huge six landed on the balcony of The Bowler’s Arms, and eventually he found a willing accomplice in Year 10 student, Ray. Together, their partnership of 45 saw the school scamper to a respectable 106-5 at the close.

In reply, Charlie Mabbatt and James Bloodworth dispelled that openers’ curse (no individual on either side had previously made more than four) by putting on 29 before attack leader Tom (then Y12) bowled Charlie with an absolute pearler. James went on to make 29 before Nikhil had him caught, the first of two wickets for the seamer that reminded us that cricket’s loss has been Further Maths’ gain. The unassuming wicket machine known as former Year 9, Yudeesh, then snaffled two in two overs – and an unlikely upset was almost on the cards until Johnson joined Matt Richardson and wise (oldish) heads carried the ONA to victory in the 15th. Thanks, as ever, to the ONA’s Tricia Ray for arranging the food and drink, and to Edan Camplin for organising the ONA side and sharing the umpiring duties.

In other news, it was brilliant to hear that, on the very day of the ONA game, Edan’s sister, Poppy, scored her first century (for Berkshire against Oxfordshire). She then enjoyed a successful summer with the Southern Vipers Emerging Player Programme and, in concert with another Y12, Ellie, helped to win the U19 girls’ league for Falkland. Year 10 Ava hit 58 not out for the adult women’s 1st team at Falkland this season, and another centurion was Year 10 Ray for his Saturday club. For all his various teams, Year 10 Leo reckons he has amassed more than 2,000 runs in total this year, and he was selected alongside Soorya for a Middlesex sojourn up north that meant they missed the ONA game. Both distinguished themselves with 50s on tour, and as, with everyone who represented the school in 2024, they can look back with pride on their achievements and the way that they have played and conducted themselves. We salute our departing Year 13s, Harrison, Alex and Ani, and trust they’ll keep in touch. As for the future, let’s hope the weather is kind after exams in 2025!

Well Done Ella

October 1, 2024

Congratulations to Ella (13P1) who represented her pony club last Friday at Blenheim International Horse Trails.

Ella and her horse jumped a brilliant round in the arena eventing 100 competition with an unlucky pole down to come 25th out of a 110 in the class.
