Year 13 The Winter’s Tale Trip

March 20, 2025

Some 30 A Level Literature students, and Dr Williams, Mr Robbins and Mr Clayton, enjoyed a riveting production of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale at the Old Tobacco Factory Theatre in Bristol last week. Highlights of the night included a pre-bus Co-op dash, the spoils of which sustained us until we were able to procure some ice cream in the interval, and – much to Mr Randall’s chagrin – our speedy trip home, which brought us up to the school gate just 50 yards ahead of his own trip to see a West End Oliver! made it back. Numerous M4 updates had been exchanged and the tension peaked near the Vodafone roundabout about who was in the lead. The culinary delights of the evening included Mr Clayton and several students snaffling their sandwiches in the swanky bar area before being rumbled with only one order of chips between them.

The play itself was a hit. As a tragicomedy, The Winter’s Tale hinges on a jarring contrast between the tragic first half and a comedic second. This was marked adroitly by the cast – the first three acts heartrending and violently emotional, the last two full of slapstick humour, emphasising the healing force of time. The bus journey back involved a sometimes heated colloquy about the various adjustments made by the director, Heidi Vaughan, to Shakespeare’s original scripts – some characters changed gender, some speeches were cut and lines reassigned, and roles were doubled. While we didn’t agree with all of these (and not amongst ourselves either), the production was carefully conceived, resulting in new ways of considering the text that will undoubtedly be useful in our essays. That noted, Winter’s Tale fan-boy, Mr Robbins, also delighted (in tour-guide mode) in pointing out Ashton Gate stadium and a glittering Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Performances run until March 29 at The Tobacco Factory

‘Clean-Cut’ Win At The YE Trade Fair.

March 20, 2025

Congratulations to our Young Enterprise team, Clean-Cut, who won best overall company and sustainability award at the YE trade fair in The Westgate Shopping Centre, Oxford on Saturday 15 March.

The team of four attended with the aim of selling their product and expanding their business. Clean Cut produce drinking glasses, using a bottle cutter to score the glass, followed by hot and then cold water to separate the glass. Twelve other companies from schools in the Thames Valley attended the event, with awards for best trade stand, customer service, sustainability and product and innovation, as well as the overall winner. An early start was required to get their trade stand set up and ready to sell to the public at 9.30am. A lot of work was put in prior to the event – designing and preparing the stand, ensuring there were sufficient products to sell and organising a rota for the day. The event was an excellent opportunity for students to discuss their products with the general public and find out whether their product was going to appeal to the market.

As part of the area Young Enterprise competition, the students received a visit to their stands from the judges. They were asked questions about their production and marketing strategy and were observed in their selling  technique. Clean-Cut were declared winners of the Sustainability Award and Best Company on the day. The awards were very well deserved as the students had put a lot of effort into developing their sustainability strategy and ensuring this was evident in their marketing and on their trade stand. They have spent a lot of time over the last couple of months producing their product. They also made a number of sales on the day!

Harry Lardner, Managing Director, said: “I am really pleased that the hard work of our team has been recognised by the judging panel who provided some important feedback that we will take on board ready for when we attend the Area Final in May.”

Well done to the students who took part – Charlie Gale, Harry Lardner, Tori McDonald and Mariana Carvalho. If you want to purchase any items from Clean-Cut visit the Clean-Cut linktree and complete an order form. The price list is available to view on the Clean-Cut Instagram page.

Special Guests at FA Girls’ Football Day

March 19, 2025

On Friday 7 March, St Bart`s took part in the FA’s Girls’ Biggest Ever Football Session (BEFS). Held the day before International Women’s Day, the BEFS took place across schools and encouraged young girls up and down the country to play football on the same day.

Year 7 and Year 9 took part in mass participation girls’ football tournaments during their PE lessons on the day. Year 7 also had two special guests attend their session; Lee Dillon (MP for Newbury and St Bart’s alumnus) joined the school to watch the tournament and take part in a Q & A with the students. Lee said, “As a member of the APPG for Women’s Football, it was fantastic to visit my old school, St Bart’s, and see so many girls taking part in the FA’s Biggest Ever Football Session. The Lionesses’ success has inspired a new generation, and it’s brilliant to see that enthusiasm reflected in schools across our constituency. Football should be for everyone, and initiatives like this are key to breaking down barriers and ensuring girls have equal access to the sport. With Women’s EURO 2025 on the horizon, now is the perfect time to build on this momentum and give every girl the chance to play—whether for fun or with dreams of going professional.”

Also joining in was Year 10 student, Jessie Archibald, who plays for Southampton FC and is currently on the FA women’s Football England pathway. Jessie said, “I love playing football, when I play I forget everything else and I am just in the moment. It was great to take part on Friday and watch younger students also enjoying the sport, demonstrating their skills and having fun.”

We have a fantastic PE department. The team work hard to encourage students to make physical activities part of their life, both in and out of school, so that they lead happy and healthy lives. St Bart’s is part of the West Berkshire Co-curricular Provision Programme, which is focused around mass participation and the broadest possible sports offer. The Biggest Ever Football Session is central to the FA’s objective within the Reaching Higher strategy to achieve a target of 90% of schools providing girls equal opportunity to play football in curricular and extra-curricular sessions by 2028. St Bart’s is excited to be part of that!

MFL Poster Competition Winners!

March 18, 2025

In Years 7, 8 and 9, Languages students were given the challenge of finding out about some cultural elements of their respective languages and where they are spoken. We feel it is so important that the students are aware that our main MFL languages are not just spoken in France, Germany and Spain and that we help students develop an understanding and empathy for the wide variety of cultures represented in each of the countries chosen. After completing their research, students had to create a poster to highlight key information. The results proved to be some beautiful presentations of the variety of towns and countries where the languages are spoken.

Our wonderful Foreign Language Assistants, Killian, Nele and Aitana, chose their favourites and decided on overall winners. We are delighted to acknowledge the work of the overall winners and want to say a big thank you to all students who took part. Here are some of the winners and posters.  Well done all!

England National Schools Lacrosse Tournament 2025

March 17, 2025

On Saturday and Sunday, St Bart’s entered the U19A National Schools Lacrosse Tournament, with the girls showing skill, determination, and teamwork against some of the best school lacrosse teams in the country. The team had a strong day one, facing a mix of challenging opposition. With excellent play they finished the day with two wins, two losses and one draw. This performance secured a well-earned place in Division One for the second day of the competition.

Competing at the highest level, we faced tough matches against Fettes and Benenden, narrowly losing 1-0 and 3-2 respectively. Despite these results, the team showed resilience and tactical discipline, earning a spot in the last 16.

In the knockout round, we took an early lead against a very strong Putney side, demonstrating great teamwork and attacking play. However, in a tense and hard-fought contest, Putney managed to turn the game around in the final minutes, with our team eventually falling to a 2-1 defeat.

Throughout the tournament, the team was led by excellent captaincy from India Duly and Sophie Livingstone, who both showed outstanding leadership, composure and determination on and off the field. Thank you to all those involved for two amazing days of Lacrosse.

Team – Alice Johnstone, Annabel Maclean, Bethany Maclean, Charlotte McDonald, Clara Horwood, Chloe Barlow, Ellie Upton, Francesca Parsons, Hannah Bosley, Imogen Duly, Imogen Moon, India Duly, Izzy John, Jo Winchester, Katya Burgess, Matilda Russell, Sophie Livingstone.

Poetry Live

March 13, 2025

The English Faculty recently took some Year 11 students to ‘Poetry Live’, an annual event aimed at supporting GCSE students with their study of the poems that they will be assessed on at the end of this academic year. Students heard poets speaking about their poems and other poems in the cluster.

Students who went said, “The trip to Poetry Live! Is an absolute must. Seeing the poets and listening to the poetry live really helped with our GCSE course and gave us a better understanding of the poems and the poet’s intentions. The Unseen Poetry run-through was very useful and gave us a good insight into how an exam board would grade our work and how to analyse unseen poems.”
