Year 11 Pizza Party

May 13, 2025

Before they left a group of Year 11 students attended their Pizza Party and were supplied with an inordinate amount of pizza and juice. Their invitations were based on their contributions to Maths and English revision workshops and they thoroughly enjoyed the fruits of their labour!

Rhodium Reading Challenge Champions

May 12, 2025

Congratulations to Year 9 students, Reem and Roba, our latest students to complete the St Bart’s Reading Challenge.

In order to achieve the final Rhodium Award in the challenge, Reem and Roba had to read at least 57 books across the five levels. This is a great achievement and they now join our Reading Challenge Champions honour roll!

In recognition of this impressive dedication to reading, both girls were congratulated by Dr Fitter (Headteacher), Mr Matthias (English Teacher) and Mrs Hewetson (St Bart’s Librarian). Mrs Hewetson was delighted to have the opportunity to compile two more hampers of goodies, including books, stationary, treats and the rare Rhodium Badge to be worn with pride. We hope Reem and Roba enjoy their hampers and continue with their love of reading – we understand the Ultimate Carnegie Challenge is next on their list!

‘Challenges’ Exhibition

May 12, 2025

There is a small exhibition of work by local young people entitled ‘Challenges’ happening in the foyer at the New Era Theatre in Wash Common. Work by four of our past and present GCSE and A Level students has been selected. A private viewing took place on Friday 1 May and the exhibition can now be viewed on a couple of Saturday mornings in June from 7-21 June, 10:30 – noon.

Congratulations to current photography student Rosie, last year’s A Level Fine Art student Elliot (artwork pictured) and last year’s GCSE students, Lily and Kateryna.

U13s Through to Finals

May 8, 2025

Our U13 girls finally got to play in their long-awaited County Cup semi-final against The Marist School.

Our girls ran out as very comfortable 4-0 winners. The first goal was a brilliant long throw from Hattie that somehow ended up in the net bouncing off a Marist player. Our second goal was from Tilly who buried it in the far left corner and then Freya scored a quick brace, one with her right foot and one thunderbolt with her left, that left the keeper with no chance.

Goalkeeper Freya was awarded player of the match by the opposition, which made us smile as she barely touched the ball! The Marist kindly provided refreshments for us afterwards, including sausage rolls and chocolate brownies which the girls were delighted with. It was a great team performance all round and now we wait and see who we get in the final!

Astronomy Trip To The Royal Observatory Greenwich

May 8, 2025

The Year 9 and 10 Astronomy GCSE students recently visited the Royal Observatory Greenwich to discover its importance in the history of astronomy. The observatory is, of course, famous for the Greenwich meridian from where longitude is measured f. The brass line in the courtyard is, however, not in the current location of the meridian used by modern navigation systems. The current true 0° longitude lies 102.5m east of this in Greenwich Park, and using a GPS we found the true meridian and lined up along it, one foot in the east and one foot in the west.

In the observatory grounds we were perfectly in time to hear about the time ball and its importance for ships to set their time pieces before heading out to sea. The ball rose half way up its mast five minutes before one o’clock and to the top at 2 minutes to go. At precisely 1 o’clock the ball dropped and the ship captains below in the Thames would set their clocks.

We then found John Harrison’s clocks. These clocks were the first to accurately keep time at sea, essential for determining longitude. He dedicated his life to developing these clocks and his invention saved countless lives He eventually won a £25,000 prize from the government! His H4 clock (pictured) is one of the most important instruments ever made.

We also had a look at the Great Equatorial Telescope and the Camera Obscura before our booked planetarium show to learn more about the solar system, galaxies and the universe. This was a very informative and beautiful show but also very relaxing and several students (and staff!) may have dozed off briefly!!

This is the first time we have made this trip and the students had a wonderful time. The experience was perfect for bringing their classwork to life.

Sock’ Cubs Spotted

May 7, 2025

We’re excited to share that Socks’ cubs have made their first appearance! We now have photos of them playing near our pond, giving us a first proper glimpse of the new arrivals. The video footage (available on our social media) is a bit rough, but it clearly shows the cubs exploring and interacting with their surroundings. We’re now working on repositioning the camera to get clearer shots while making sure we don’t disturb them. It’s a special moment for our school’s wildlife community—stay tuned for more updates as the cubs grow and become more confident!

Year 11 Graduation 2025

May 7, 2025

Last Friday our Year 11 Graduation took place in glorious sunshine! It was an opportunity to reflect on all our Year 11s have learnt and experienced during their time at St Bart’s, as well as a moment to celebrate achievements and friendships.

As is tradition, students and teachers signed shirts and this year we were pretty impressed with some of the elaborate shirt designs! Afterwards the year gathered in school hall to hear from Dr Fitter and to reminisce as the last five years were captured in a fantastic photo slideshow. Our Year 11 Tutors, who have been a part of our students’ journeys since they arrived at school as new Year 7s, handed out  ‘Tutee of the Tutor Group’ Awards and students were set one last school test with a ‘guess the baby’ quiz (hint: they were all staff)! Mr Bandy, Assistant Headteacher KS4, then concluded the graduation with some special KS4 Awards before everyone headed back out into the sun to enjoy ice cream and their gift bags.

We really hope our Year 11s enjoyed the occasion. We wish them all the best in their upcoming exams and we thank them for all they have contributed to school life and the St Bart’s community. We look forward to welcoming many of them back to Sixth Form in September and, for those who move on to new adventures, we wish them the all the very best of success in their new endeavours.

BOOK RETURNS REQUEST – Y11 & Y13

Now that we are approaching exams and nearing the end of this academic year for Y11 and Y13, we would like to remind parents that your child’s textbooks, library books and laptops (if they have one) should be returned to the Library by Friday 20 June 2025, at the latest. Of course, at the moment students will still be using these resources to complete their studies, but please can you ensure that any resources belonging to school are returned once students have completed their exams. Please can students hand them to a member of the Library staff so we can check that their account is clear. Many thanks for your help. Students can come and speak to us in the Library if there are any questions or concerns.

BartholoNews Banner Competition 2025

May 7, 2025

St Bart’s newsletter goes out weekly to staff, students and parents/carers, with a circulation of over 4900. We are looking for a BartholoNews title design for the school year 2025/2026. Last year, the winning student design (right) was by Gauravi in Year 9.

The new winning design will head up the newsletter throughout the new school year and will include a by-line for the student designer. You will also win a certificate to include in your portfolio of work and a £30 Amazon voucher.

This is a great opportunity to have your work seen by our whole school community. It would look great on personal statements, CVs or even House Colour applications.

Design Brief

  • The design should be bold and clear and must feature the newsletter title, BartholoNews.
  • It should include our school logo or space for us to add the logo
  • The design can be in any style or media
  • Please use the design template to ensure your design has the correct dimensions.
