A Great Night With The PA!

March 27, 2025

Thank you to everyone who took part in the Parents’ Association Quiz and Chips Evening that took place last Friday. The event was hosted by Quiz Masters, Miss Brenton (Head of Humanities) and Mr Langton (Head of Citizenship and Politics), who took time out of teaching students to test parents’ knowledge over a series of 6 rounds, including a music round. The event was won by team ‘Ste Lin the answers’. Teams were fuelled by an excellent bar and some delicious Fish & Chips provided by Skippers. Thank you to everyone who entered a team and who supported the raffle on the night. A huge thank you also to our Quiz Masters, the Site team and Mr Weller who helped with hall and AV set up, and of course our brilliant Parents’ Association volunteers who organised a superb evening.

£1187 was raised which will be matched funded by Vodafone. A tremendous effort, well done!

If you would like to get involved with the Parents Association – whether joining the committee, organising or helping at events or even just keeping in touch with our news – please visit: Parents’ Association – St Bart’s School

Over £1,500 Raised For Comic Relief

March 27, 2025

Thank you to everyone who supported St Bart’s efforts in aid of Red Nose Day for Comic Relief last Friday. Lots of students took time to cheer on their House in the hotly contested House Staff Netball, with Curnock being crowned victorious! Alongside Non-School Uniform donations, the House Bake Sale was also a brilliant success and we are most grateful to all those who brought in yummy contributions. In total, the amount raised by the school, including Gift Aid, was £1,555.77. Remember, if you have not had a chance to do so there is still time to donate as the donation page will stay live for another week.

German Week at St Bart’s

March 26, 2025

Last week St Bart’s was one of numerous schools to take part in the prestigious #ShoutOutForGerman campaign, a week-long, national celebration of German language in the UK.

Organised by the German Embassy, the Goethe-Institut UK and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the campaign aims to pay tribute to “all the schools, teachers and champions of German inside and outside of classrooms who work tirelessly to encourage and strengthen the case for language learning”. It is part of the embassy’s wider work, making the case for German.

The German department at St Bart’s organised a myriad of engaging activities, including visiting speakers, competitions, clubs and films. Events took place in lessons, activities times, and after-school throughout the week. German books were also available in the library, and the canteen laid on German delicacies including Bratwurst and Strudel at lunchtime.

The school was lucky enough to host a number of top-class guest speakers. A highlight was a visit from senior figures at the German Embassy and the Goethe-Institut UK to see how we were celebrating all things German. On Thursday, Susanne Frane, Head of Culture and Education at the German Embassy, and Andrea Pfeil, Deputy Director and Head of Language Department, North West Europe at the Goethe-Institut London, met the headteacher, Dr Fitter. They also visited a Year 12 German class, and joined Year 9s completing a German quiz around the MFL department.

Other speakers included Dr Ian Ellison, a post- doctoral researcher on the Kafka’s Transformative Communities Project at the University of Oxford and a Visiting Fellow at Wadham College; Wayne Morse, a recruitment specialist from BMW; Gregor Kleinknecht, founder partner at MEUM Law in London; and Anna Bawden, Health and Social Affairs Correspondent at the Guardian.

On Monday, Dr Ellison spent the day speaking to German classes from Year 7 to Year 13 about Franz Kafka; why his writing is so accessible, how to discover more about his stories and how to read and translate from German into English. On Tuesday, Year 10 had an online webinar with the British Council on the theme of ‘Where can languages take me?’, as well as a video message from Joel Douglas, former head student and alumnus, who is studying a German and History degree at the University of Exeter and is currently in Mainz on placement as a language assistant.

On Wednesday we were joined by Gregor Kleinknecht, a dual qualified German and English lawyer, who spoke with our Year 9, 10 and 12 about the importance of German and languages for business and in the recruitment process at law firms. On Friday students from Years 8, 9 and 10 were joined by Wayne Morse, who spoke about how BMW as a global car brand recruits apprentices and graduates in the UK and Anna Bawden, health and social affairs correspondent at the Guardian, who is a fluent German, French and Italian speaker. Mr Morse gave a short presentation to several classes about the apprenticeships, intern and graduate employment opportunities available for German speakers at BMW and why languages are helpful, and Ms Bawden spoke about why speaking German and other languages are good for many different careers.

“We have always been proud of the importance Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) plays in our curriculum,” said Dr Fitter. “Speaking more than one language helps build a sense of global citizenship as well as opening up future employment opportunities.” Research has shown that by studying a foreign language students will enhance their grammar skills and improve their analytic and interpretive capacities in English too. We hope that an added bonus of taking part in this prestigious week will encourage many more students to consider choosing German as an A Level option.  “We are determined to continue to raise the profile of the benefits of learning German,’’ Dr Fitter said.

The MFL department offers French, German, and Spanish to students, from Year 7 up to A Level. Students can also take GCSE Mandarin and Latin, with lessons taking place through an after-school club. In addition to language lessons, St Bart’s also provides many other language related activities, including foreign exchange trips, an annual foreign language Karaoke competition, a national translation competition, and a cultural poster contest.

Mrs Tucker, Head of German said: “I would really like to thank all students, colleagues, volunteers and visiting guest speakers who have fully supported the German department in backing the German Embassy’s aim to ‘Shout Out for German’ in the UK. In our increasingly competitive job market, it is not only important that students understand the value that employers place upon the skill of being able to speak another language but that they also become aware of the number of German companies in the UK who are looking to recruit German speakers. Our aim this week was to ‘shout out for German’ to students across the whole school. The vibrant atmosphere and enthusiasm of our students has been amazing!”

National Careers Week 2025

March 6, 2025

This week is National Careers Week, focussing on careers guidance and resources in education across the UK in order to support young people to develop awareness and excitement about possible pathways.

During this week, we also wanted to share with you the recent experiences of our Year 13 Business BTEC students who have recently all spent a week on work experience.  Preparation for, and completion of, the week placement supports one of the Business BTEC assessed units. Students are also required to review their placement, evaluating the ways in which work experience supports future career aspirations.

The placements are organised by the West Berkshire Education and Business Partnership, who conduct interviews with the students to identify their career interests before identifying a suitable placement. Our Year 13  were supported by some brilliant local organisations including Arlington Arts, Berkshire Renewable Energy, Charter Travel, Group 1 Ford Automotive, Honesty Group, Jones Robinson, Kerridge Commercial Systems, Natwest Bank, Reading, Spurcroft Primary School and Wokingham Waterside. Thank you to everyone who has supported these important placements.

This is just some of the great feedback from our Year 13s:

“I thoroughly enjoyed my work experience at Group 1 Ford in Newbury. During my time there, I made several account reviews appointments, which allowed me to learn the ins and outs of the business. Additionally, I enjoyed the social interactions and built relationships within the team. Their appreciation for my efforts led to an exciting offer for a role as a trainee and then a sales executive once I leave school!  I had a very positive experience at the dealership and it helped confirm that is what I want to do once I have left Sixth Form.” – Josh

“I went to Spurcroft Primary School for the week for my work experience, which I really enjoyed. I spent the week with a mixed Year 3/4 class called Beech class. I observed the teacher and helped children to plan stories, understand fractions, learn about the digestive system and make models in art. I also listened to them read. On top of helping out in the classroom, I also supported preparation of lessons, made a display and put up children’s work. My favourite thing that I did during the placement was working with children to understand each lesson. I found this very rewarding especially when children started to understand things which they had previously found difficult and were proud of. Overall, I really enjoyed my time at Spurcroft and this has helped me to understand what I would like to do in the future.” – Ellie

“I felt very welcome at the Honesty Bakers and Makers. I was working in both the bakery and kitchen to allow me to experience both sides of the production. I found it interesting being on the other side of the business and seeing what the customers do not, and how the food is then taken to the different coffee shops and sold. I took on many tasks during my work experience including making many different types of sandwiches, 8kg of coleslaw, soups and sausage rolls all in the space of two days. In addition, in the bakery, making a range of cakes and treats, one of the tasks is to crack 200 eggs and make different types of icing. The workers made me feel like part of the team and valued during my week.” – Mollie

“I went to Jones Robinson in Newbury, which is their lead office in the UK. I got the chance to see how the work of each department, from admin to marketing and sales, work together to produce a seamless experience for clients, which I found particularly fascinating. I also enjoyed speaking to colleagues about their career, which helps shape ideas of mine. Overall, it was a beneficial and good experience”. – Freddie

“I enjoyed talking to the teams of people at Kerridge Commercial System. I was able to help fix bugs in the code and complete testing which is something I am very interested In. Overall I thought it was an amazing experience.” – Ashton

The events we will be running for students to celebrate National Careers Week include:

  • Look out for posters on classroom doors – you might be surprised by the former careers of some of your teachers!
  • A careers quiz. The link to the quiz will be in the student briefing. There will be a prize.
  • A display of information posters and resources in the school Library for students to explore.
  • The Careers Adviser, Charlotte, will also be in the Library on Thursday lunchtime for a drop-in session for any year group.

On 19 March, another Destinations Fair is also coming to St Bart’s. This time for our Year 12s,  which will be happening on 19 March for all Year 12 students. Organisations confirmed as attending include AWE, Barratt Homes, Basingstoke College of Technology, Gardner Leader, Jones Robinson, Kerridge Commercial Systems, NHS Radiography, Oxford Brookes University, Portsmouth University, Reading College, Royal Holloway, University Centre Newbury, University Centre Sparsholt, University of Reading, University of Winchester and Vodafone. If you work for, or know of, a post 18 provider who would be interested in attending, please contact dseward@stbarts.co.uk

Curnock and Patterson House Evening

March 6, 2025

It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights…!  Our annual Curnock-Patterson House Evening was back for its annual shindig before half term, and with over 30 acts performing, it really was a night to remember.  With talent in abundance, our audience enjoyed a variety of acts, including singers, dancers (tap, Irish and street), comedy, music, and, of course, the annual ridiculousness that is the Staff Sketch (Gladiators this year, and yes, we had foam fingers!).  Much fun was had on the night and over £1000 was raised on the night for both House charities, Newbury Cancer Care and Guide Dogs!  We’d really like to thank all students who performed or helped out on the night (shout out to Mr Weller and the amazing Tech Crew!), the staff and the PA who gave up their time to help, and of course, all you lovely people who came along and supported this event.  We could not do it without you – THANK YOU!  Until next year! PS we have unclaimed raffle prizes in House Office, so bring your tickets along and see if you’ve won!

The Parents’ Association were delighted to provide a bar. Thanks to everyone who volunteered and supported the event. We look forward to seeing lots of parents at the up and coming PA Quiz and Chips evening on the 21 March. Click here to buy tickets.

British Science Week 2025

March 5, 2025

British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths that takes place from 7-16 March 2025. This year the theme of the week is ‘adapt and change’, and St Bart’s are joining schools around the country to raise awareness, spark enthusiasm and celebrate science.

St Bart’s Science faculty have been busy organising activities for the students over the course of the coming weeks. On Monday, Year 7 enjoyed the traditional Whizz Bang assembly with Head of Science, Dr Alonzi. There were explosions, jelly beans, hair-raising experiments and much more! All students are welcome to another chance to see a thrilling Whizz Bang show during Activity Time on Friday 14 March.

As British Science Week coincides with National Careers Week, Year 7 are also looking at science careers in their lessons. Mrs Woodgate will be holding a fascinating Full Pheasant Dissection, with an open invitation to all students, and Dr Costambeys will be running a ‘design a lab coat’ competition and challenging our Year 7, 8 and 9 to get creative. Students can collect a template from their tutors and there are prizes to be won. Dr Costambeys will also be choosing the best to be entered for the national competition.

Next week sees the return of the House Science competition on Wednesday 12 March, when student teams from each House will battle to solve a series of practical science tasks and solve some tricky scientific puzzles. Last year, Patterson won the battle to design, build and trial a device to accurately measure 1 minute. We look forward to reporting on the 2025 tasks and winners in an upcoming BartholoNews.

Commemorative Rose Planting

February 6, 2025

Thank you to all those who attended the Commemorative Rose Planting held in memory of St Bart’s staff Eric Danvers, Phil Gray, Elizabeth Hopper (née Hughes), John King and John Wright.

It was so wonderful to see members of the families and so many former students and staff join us for the ceremony. Our particular thanks to Mike Hart, former Head of Curnock, who spoke about each of those we gathered to remember, and Gary Norman, Chair of Governors, who spoke about the vocation of teaching and the important role teachers play in so many young lives, while Dr Fitter planted the rose.

The Hansa rose will now be resplendent in our Heritage Garden rose bed and is accompanied by a plaque which reads ‘We remember those members of staff who gave great service to the school’.

After the planting of the rose, many of our guests joined us for tea, coffee and a delicious selection of cakes, organised by our catering team, and there was the opportunity to reminisce together and to catch up on the news of many in our school community. We hope the event was a fitting tribute to our wonderful former colleagues.

Holocaust Memorial Day

January 30, 2025

Monday 27 January

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Auschwitz has become a global symbol of terror, genocide and the Shoah (known commonly as the Holocaust). Initially, Auschwitz was set up as a concentration camp for many people who were persecuted by the Nazis and their collaborators. In 1942, it also became the site of extermination, where over 1 million Jewish adults and children were murdered. In addition to Auschwitz, many other camps were set up across Europe to eradicate European Jewry.

On Holocaust Memorial Day, we remembered the many millions of lives that were lost during the Holocaust, whilst also remembering other victims of the Nazis and their collaborators. These included homosexuals, disabled people, Roma & Sinti, Soviet POW, non-Jewish Poles and political opponents. January 27 also marks remembrance for those who were persecuted during other genocides in the 20th century including Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

As there now exists only a handful of Holocaust survivors in the world, we must ensure that the memory of those who were persecuted lives on. At St Bart’s, we are committed to preserving this memory and have worked alongside UCL’s Holocaust Education Centre to develop our teaching resources. In April 2024, 40 of our current Year 13 students visited Krakow, Poland, to learn more about pre-war Jewish life, the Holocaust and life after the Holocaust. They walked through the old ghetto where Jews were concentrated under Nazi control, heard from a Holocaust survivor and visited Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Over this week and next week, Mr Owen, Miss May and our Beacon Captains, Abigail Marshall (9P3), Daniel Elliott (9P3), Dylan Griffiths (9C2) and Eleri Richlings (9P1) will speak with students during their assemblies on the importance of remembering the Holocaust. We are also excited to welcome ‘Voices’, a Holocaust education charity on 10 February, who will perform their play ‘Kindness: A legacy of the Holocaust’ to our Year 9 cohort. They will also perform a second showing for any of our students, their parents and carers on 10 February at 4.30pm. For further information please visit The Beacon School Programme page on our website or if you have further questions please email mowen@stbarts.co.uk

Patterson House Film Night

January 20, 2025

On 13 December 2024, the Patterson House Film Night debuted in spectacular style, bringing students together for a web-slinging evening of cinematic fun. The chosen feature? Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse – a multiverse masterpiece that had everyone laughing, gasping, and cheering.

It wasn’t just about the movie magic, though. This was Patterson House’s first ever film night, designed to raise funds for their house charity, Guide Dogs, whilst creating a fun, inclusive event for all students. The result? A blockbuster hit, with over £350 raised for a fantastic cause.

Of course, no movie night would be complete without the essentials – popcorn, snacks and fizzy drinks were flowing faster than Spidey can spin a web!

A massive thank you to everyone who came along to support the event and made it such a great night. Stay tuned, film buffs – another movie night is coming soon to a school hall near you!
