Badminton Festivals

At the end of last term, we hosted two Badminton Festivals. The KS4 students played Kennet School and Denefield School and the KS3 students played only Kennet School. All students had a fantastic time, playing a lot of badminton and getting more experience in playing competitive matches. Well done to all involved!

Newbury Nature Corridor

Official Opening Walk, 10.00am, Saturday 4 May There is a tradition of nature conservation at St Bart’s which started long before I arrived. This year, I have been lucky to be part of the St Bart’s involvement in a project for the student community and their families in the school catchment area.

Patterson Chalks up 10 Guide Dogs!

 The Patterson House charity is Guide Dogs, and this week they were visited by their ninth sponsored dog, Luker. Luker, who is now 18 months old, was accompanied by Charlotte, her trainer, and she treated the students to a display of her skills. Luker showed how she can find empty chairs so that, once matched with a blind person, she can help them find seats on buses or at busy doctors’ surgeries.

Year 12 Trip to Krakow

A group of our Year 12 students, accompanied by Mr Owen, Miss May and Mrs Lane are in Krakow, Poland. The 3-day trip is part of our Beacon School Programme, in conjunction with the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education, which enhances teaching and learning about the Holocaust.  The visit will include a visit to Kazimierz, Krakow (considering the impact of the occupation), a trip to Galicia Museum to meet with a Holocaust Survivor and a visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum.  Students will also visit Rynek Podgorski to learn more about the former ghetto, living conditions and forced labour.

Romeo & Juliet for Year 9

On Friday last week, the touring theatre company, Box Clever, made their third visit to school this year. This time they were performing ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to Year 9. This fast-paced, exciting performance really captivated students and brought the play to life. Students were eager to get involved in the workshop opportunity afterwards, and it was great to hear them speaking (shouting) lines as the love triangle between Paris, Romeo and Juliet followed its devastating, but predictable course.

Greenham Common Trust Youth Distribution Meeting

Last year, we reported that St Bart’s students had been given the opportunity to join in the Greenham Common Trust’s Youth Distribution Committee. The trust has supported over 5000 local good causes and distributed over £71 Million since their inception in 1997. This committee consists of young people from local secondary schools and groups. They review projects and agree how best to award grants. Archie (13D5) and Luisa (13C2) have been invited to take part again recently.
