Graduation Trip to Bath

March 4, 2024

During the Autumn Term, 14 students from Years 8 and 9 took part in the scholarship programme that was run by The Brilliant Club (www.thebrilliantclub.org).

In a series of university style tutorials, led by a PHD tutor in their specialist field, students learned about different types of culture and leadership practices around the world.

At the end of the programme, they wrote a 2000 word essay with the title “Analyse the effects of culture on leadership practices”. All 14 students worked excellently throughout and managed to graduate from Bath University in February. Students had a tour of the university, and then attended a graduation ceremony to celebrate their hard work and achievements.

German Exchange 2024

February 22, 2024

St Bart’s students from Years 9, 10 and 12 took part in the German Exchange to our long-standing partner school, the Otto-Hahn Gymnasium in Monheim, between Monday 29 January and Monday 5 February 2024. The week involved a day in the German school, participating in an English lesson and starting work on a joint project with their exchange partners. St Bart’s students also went to Schloss Burg, a traditional medieval castle, had a day-trip to the Haus der Geschichte Museum in Bonn, and a day trip to Aachen with their German partners. Some highlights of the trip were the visit to the Lindt chocolate factory in Aachen and the opportunity to try traditional waffles with cherries. The German exchange partners will be visiting their St Barts partners in June. Students stayed in host families in Monheim and some of their comments are here below:

“The past 7 days in Monheim have been amazing. I got to know new German people and made friends with my partner’s friends.  We had lots of fun together and we did things like bowling and laser tag”

Chris Broadfoot, Year 9

“Lots of opportunities to make long-term friends, a very enjoyable experience.  I loved every minute.”

Chloe Johnson, Year 9

“At first I was nervous, but when I arrived at Emma’s house they were really nice and welcoming.  The food in Germany is very different to here and they love drinking sparkling water, which is strange!”

Hazel Cook, Year 9

“In school we worked with younger students and helped them in English lessons. I liked meeting the students there and they were very welcoming- as well as everyone in my partner’s family.  I was shocked at how early they finish school – 1.50pm!  My favourite part was probably going to the chocolate museum and the hardest part was waking up so early.”

Millie Taylor, Year 9

“The German exchange was an intense week! It was great to get to know a family from a different country and the people that I stayed with were amazing hosts. We learned a lot about both history and day-to-day life in Germany. All in all it was an incredible and unforgettable experience.”

Lucy Heelan Year 12

“Going on the German exchange definitely helped with my confidence when speaking German…My exchange family were very patient with my attempts to speak German and helped me when they could.”

El Prescott, Year 12

Sixth Form Performing Arts Trip

January 25, 2024

On Tuesday 8 January, 12 Year 12 and 13 Performing Arts students went to the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton for a performance of the new touring production of ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’. We were lucky enough to have fantastic seats in the stalls, which meant we had a great view of the action. This musical tells the story of Jamie New, a young Year 11 student who decides to attend his school prom in drag. Jamie is 16 and lives on a council estate in Sheffield. At school he doesn’t quite fit in. He is terrified about the future and his place in it. Supported by his brilliant loving mum and surrounded by his friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight.Along with the lively upbeat score and the live band visible on stage, the production also included a clever set design, fabulous costumes and moody lighting. We all had a fantastic evening and the performance has helped us consider dance and drama within a musical theatre setting and will help inspire us when we are choreographing and devising in our practical coursework.

Year 10 Hands-On Sky Studios Experience

January 8, 2024

On Tuesday 30 November, Year 10 Film Studies students (and two Year 12s) journeyed to the West London home of Sky TV.

Students were able to see the sheer scale of the Sky ‘campus’, where over 7,000 people work, and saw both the Sky News and Sky Sports News studios. The highlight of the afternoon though was working in groups, supported by Sky employees, to come up with an idea for a film trailer, shooting it on high-end cameras utilising green screen technology and then editing it all together. The highly amusing finished products were then screened for all the groups to appreciate.

Lucas (10C1) said, “I really enjoyed the studio space where we made our film trailers and my favourite part was working under pressure, trying to figure things out as a group. I learned how the news is broadcast and how if they go over their timeslot they get fined £100,000, so being precise is really important!”

England V Netherlands Wembley Trip

December 7, 2023

On Friday 1 December, 90 students from Year 7 to Year 13 went to Wembley Stadium to watch England Women play the Netherlands, and it ended up being an exciting game. England didn’t start off well, conceding 2 good goals early on, meaning we were 2-0 down at half time. We were confident that England could get back into it, and we predicted a 3-2 win for the Lionesses during the half-time break.

Not long after the start of the second half, Georgia Stanway brought us back into it, with Lauren Hemp soon equalising a minute later. The score was now 2-2, and 5 minutes of extra time had just been announced. We were still confident England could win. In the 91st minute, Ella Toone, who had recently been subbed on, scored the winner for England, and the crowd went wild. All of the St Bart’s students were jumping up and down with happiness, and we now waited for the final whistle. When it was eventually blown, the Lionesses had made an incredible comeback, and we celebrated on the coach journey back, through all of the London traffic, with Miss Bilcliff’s expert DJing. A big thanks to Miss Bilcliff for organising this trip, it was a great success!

Textiles Trip to Bournemouth

November 13, 2023

On Thursday 19 October, Year 10 Textiles students spent the day visiting the Oceanarium in Bournemouth. Students observed, sketched and took photographs of marine animals and plants to use as inspiration for their current GCSE coursework, based on Coast. Here is what some students had to say about the trip:

“My favourite part of the trip was when we got to go into the individual tunnels. It allowed us to get close and personal with the fish as well as see the coral and sea anemone in close detail.” Zoe

“My favourite bit of the Textiles trip to the Oceanarium in Bournemouth was the bubbles that you could poke your head into, as they made it a very immersive experience letting you feel as if you are in the tank with the fish and let you see the detail of their scales up close. I also enjoyed walking along the beach and being able to experience the textures of the beach for inspiration for my final project” Rafi

Y12 PE Trip To Bath University

October 19, 2023

On Thursday 12 October, the Year 12 PE and BTEC Sport students went to Bath University. It was an inspiring trip which taught us all about Sport Science and even included a lecture from Jonathan who is a qualified Sport Scientist.

We started off the day with a strength and conditioning session, which was taken by current student, Adam. In this session, we learnt about different techniques involved in speed, which built us up to doing a sprint, measured by light gates.

We then moved on to a session in the lab where Charlie and Isaac each participated in a test. Charlie did the VO2 max test and Isaac did the Wingate test, whilst the rest of us watched. Their heart rates increased and we could see the amount of gases that they were breathing in whilst exercising.

After lunch, we had a quick tour of the sports facilities and then finished the day with a very interesting lecture about how altitude affects performance. It was a great day at the university and definitely inspired us. A huge thank you to Jonathan, Adam and Liv who were involved in leading the day at the University.

Year 7 Trip to New Forest

October 18, 2023

Last week saw our Year 7 students head out on a trip to the New Forest Outdoor Centre. Curnock and Davis went first on Tuesday and Evers and Patterson had their adventures on Thursday. On both days the students showed amazing courage and support for each other. Students shared their views …

“My trip to the New Forest was amazing! We did high and low ropes, archery, fire lighting and we had raft building. My personal favourite was the high and low ropes. Everyone supported each other and had such a fun time. Going to and back was so fun because everyone was talking and having so much fun.” Hannah (7P2)

“Our trip to New Forest was really enjoyable. There was a vast variety of activities and so many team building skills, you could really get used to the atmosphere. From raft building to archery, every activity we did was so fun and engaging. Everybody contributed and was included. It was especially fun because it allowed you to leave your comfort zone and let you do things you won’t normally do, letting you experience new opportunities as well as infinite possibilities!” Tanishka (7D1)

Goethe Institut Visit

October 16, 2023

Recently we took Year 12 and Year 13 students studying German to the Goethe Institut in London. This is a worldwide cultural institute aiming to promote knowledge of the German language abroad and fostering international cultural collaborations.

“Visiting the Goethe Institut was a great experience. I particularly enjoyed learning about how having a qualification in German is attractive to employers. The German film we watched also gave me further historical insight.”
