Curriculum Overview
St Bart’s staff and governors have aspirations and expectations about students’ education that far exceed the specifications of the National Curriculum. We seek to offer diversity and choice at appropriate stages and believe lessons should be interesting, stimulating, intellectually challenging and supported by an ambitious programme of enrichment and co-curricular activities.
Our Curriculum Principles and Intent
St Bartholomew’s School delivers an ambitious and vibrant curriculum which:
- inspires students to enjoy learning and to develop a thirst for knowledge and a curiosity about the world around them
- provides exceptional breadth and variety
- celebrates diverse perspectives, cultures and values
- promotes resilience to deal with the changing world
- opens doors for future progression in education, training and employment
- develops key transferable skills such as communication, cooperation and adaptability
Our Curriculum Delivery – Implementation
At St Bart’s, we place a lot of importance on recruiting subject specialists. As a result, our curriculum is delivered, and is constantly being refined and improved, by committed and highly qualified teachers. We are extremely proud of the high quality of teaching at our school and the subsequent student outcomes.
Students are engaged in a carefully sequenced ‘learning journey’ within all their subjects. They understand how topics interrelate and how new learning is built on the foundations of existing knowledge. There is a powerful sense of direction but, crucially, students consistently have opportunities to revisit prior learning, developing and embedding understanding.
Our curriculum builds on the knowledge and skills which students have brought from their primary school. St Bart’s is committed to engaging with our local primary schools, holding termly meetings with Headteachers to inform the planning and delivery of our curriculum.
We are responsive to the needs of individual students and adapt our teaching to ensure that all students can access and enjoy our curriculum. Teachers are supported by our fantastic Personalised Learning team.
St Bart’s understands the benefits of co-curricular experiences in enhancing the delivery of our curriculum and provides a wide range of trips and activities alongside lessons. There is a strong emphasis on ensuring that all students can access these opportunities.
Our curriculum engages creatively and imaginatively with technology to prepare students for the opportunities of 21st century life. In 2024-25, in all but one of our year groups, students will have access to Chromebooks or other equivalent devices and our ambition is that all students will have access to Chromebooks by 2025-2026.
