Curnock
Curnock House focuses on fostering a collaborative community where resilience is celebrated, contributions are valued, and respect is the cornerstone. By working together, we can create an environment that nurtures personal development and a strong sense of collective responsibility.
Curnock House is named after George Ashwin Curnock (1893-1917)
George Ashwin Curnock entered St Bartholomew’s School in 1905 and at the end of his first year he won the Third Form prize. He won school prizes for Latin and French in 1907 and passed the Cambridge Junior Locals in 1908, with Honours and distinction in Latin and French. He was active in all spheres of school life, being one of the school’s leading actors and making one of the highest scores on the shooting range in 1907. Curnock was made a School Prefect and served 11 terms as Editor of The Newburian. He was later elected secretary of the Debating Society, member of the Committee of the Scientific Society and Senior Prefect.
In 1911 Curnock gained an Open Scholarship for Classics at Pembroke College, Cambridge and in spring of 1914 he won his first College prize for Greek verse, before the call of his country overrode his academic ambitions. By Spring 1915 Curnock was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade – on 14 August 1917 he was killed in action. His name appears on the Menin Gate ‘Memorial to the Missing’ in Ypres, Belgium.

Curnock House Charity
Curnock House Charity is Newbury Cancer Care. Newbury Cancer Care helps local people who have been diagnosed with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses. They offer practical help and information to patients and their families living in West Berkshire, and are the parent charity for the Rainbow Rooms and the Rosemary Centre at the West Berkshire Community Hospital.
We were delighted that in May 2024, following a donation of £11,500, we were able to announce that we were celebrating a very special milestone of having raised over £100,000 for Newbury Cancer Care since our link was formed in 1987.
