Davis House is named after Alexander Herbert Davis (1889-1915)
Alexander Herbert Davis entered St Bartholomew’s School in 1898. An excellent footballer, he was vice captain of the First XI in 1904, and captain in 1905. He was equally prominent in cricket, cross-country, hockey and was frequently in the fives inter-House and School Championship. Davis was a member of the Committee of the Debating Society, a Lance-corporal in the Cadet Corps and secretary of the Rifle Club. He played in the inter-House chess tournament in 1904, appeared as an actor in a number of school plays, and was made a School Prefect in 1905 and a School Librarian in 1906.
On leaving school, Davis obtained a clerkship in the Metropolitan Bank in Oxford. He undertook duties of honorary treasurer to the ONA (Old Newburian Association) until 1914. When the Great War broke out Davis joined the Artists Rifles, however he died of a brain tumour before he was able to join the front line. He is buried just 400m away from the school in Newtown Road Cemetery, Newbury.
