Welcome to our three Foreign Language Assistants for the coming year. We are delighted to be able to welcome back our Spanish assistant from last year, who is joined this year by new French and German assistants Hopefully the three of them will soon feel at home as the new “team” in the MFL Department. We are so lucky to be a school that still has the chance to offer native speaker expertise to our students at all levels.
For the first time this year, in addition to their work in class, and with A level students, the three assistants will be offering total immersion conversation clubs after school for those students who wish to enrol. There will be no more than 10 students per class, allowing plenty of opportunity for speaking and interacting with the assistant. Separate groups will run for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 and places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Each lesson lasts 40 minutes and costs £5.
Younger students will have the chance to learn more about the culture and traditions of the countries where each language is spoken through a variety of games, activities and instruction, all in the foreign language. Older students will also have the chance to enrich their cultural knowledge, but in addition there will be a focus on the key topics that feature at GCSE, in order to build students’ confidence in discussing these in a foreign language.
If your child is interested in joining one of these groups, they should collect a letter from the MFL Department and return the reply slip as soon as possible. Lessons will run until the end of the first half of the summer term, at which point we look forward to a performance from the KS3 groups to showcase what they have learnt!
