Sixth Form Updates

Published 12 December 2022

Last week was a busy one for our Sixth Form Team and students – even by their standards!

Sixth Form Political Hustings

On Thursday, St Bart’s Sixth Form hosted representatives from four major political parties, who gamely agreed to field questions from a packed audience of 16-18 year olds. The courageous candidates included Cllr Ross Mackinnon (Conservatives), Cllr David Marsh (Greens), Les Cooper (Labour) and Cllr Vaughan Miller (Liberal Democrats).

Deputy Head Student, Ed Morris, chaired the lively session. The questions, pre-selected from a wide range submitted by the students prior to the event, sought the representative’s views on a variety of topics including votes at 16, trust in politics, tuition fees, abolition of the House of Lords and regulation of water companies, in particular the pumping of raw sewage into rivers and the sea.

“The panel was great, very game and incredibly well informed. I thought they responded really well to a wide range of interesting questions and I loved seeing the immediate reactions of the audience, it was a very lively atmosphere”. Ed (Year 13)

Mock MMI interviews

On Thursday evening, nine Year 13 and two Year 14 students took part in Mock MMI (Multiple Mini Interviews) in preparation for the highly competitive medical application process. Students moved round different stations and subject specialists as they had the opportunity to practice a range of interview skills: from role-play, empathy and ethics in medicine, hot topics and medical knowledge, data interpretation, decision making and communication skills.

Mrs Lane, Head of Sixth Form – “The Mock MMIs are an important stage in our Early Entrant Programme. The experience allows students time to reflect on and improve their interview skills prior to the real thing. We want students to give the very best interview they can and to maximise their chances of successfully securing a place on these highly competitive courses.”

Thanks to all staff who volunteered their time to conduct the interviews.

Winter Ball

Finally, the week ended with the fabulous affair that is the Sixth Form Annual Winter Ball! Organised by our school officers, this year the theme was ‘Great Gatsby’, with monies raised in aid of Sebastian’s Action Trust which supports families of seriously ill children. Students danced the night away in black tie to ‘3ofClubs’ DJ.
