Applied Science (BTEC)
BTEC in Applied Science covers the key science concepts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, a good understanding of which are essential to scientists and technicians working in science and science-related organisations.
By developing knowledge of these disciplines, students gain an understanding of scientific knowledge within a vocational context. The course looks at how science affects the world around us and how it is used in the workplace and industry.
BTEC in Applied Science focuses on practical investigation and learning how things work. Students follow a unit based structure and complete project-based assessments. Students focus on the development of the practical, interpersonal and thinking skills required to be able to succeed in employment and higher education.
Sixth Form (Year 12-13)
BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science
Examination Board: EDEXCEL
Course Description
The course studies topics across the three core science disciplines, such as animal and plant cells; tissues; atomic structure and bonding; chemical and physical properties of substances related to their uses; waves and their application in communications. Students will be introduced to laboratory equipment and techniques, including titration, colorimetry, calorimetry, chromatography, calibration procedures and laboratory safety.
Students will have the opportunity to calibrate equipment and develop skills and awareness to manage safety aspects of given laboratory procedures and techniques. The course develops practical competence, and the analysis of group results will allow students to gain an understanding of the reliability, repeatability and reproducibility of various procedures and techniques, as well as to understanding their progress through the course.
The fundamental scientific knowledge, practical skills and transferable skills ( organisational, problem-solving, teamwork and data interpretation) developed in this BTEC prepare students to either enter employment or to progress onto university to study science-related courses.
Assessment
The BTEC in Applied Science comprises four units, two of which are examined over two years.
Entry Requirements
The BTEC in Applied Science builds on GCSE Science knowledge, particularly with respect to ‘How Science Works’. Grade 5s in both Science GCSE and Mathematics GCSE are preferential.
Ultimately, a good attitude to learning and adherence to deadlines, along with an interest in science, is the recipe to success in L3 BTEC Applied Science.
