Photography
A Level Photography explores elements of visual language, line, form, colour, pattern and texture in the context of photography.
The course considers how images relate to social, environmental, cultural and/or ethical contexts, and to the time and place in which they were created. Students look at continuity and change in different styles, genres and traditions relevant to photography.
Sixth Form (Year 12-13)
Examination Board: AQA – Art & Design: Photography 7206
Course Description
In A Level Photography, students have the opportunity to study the work of established photographers/artists (past and recent, European and Non European), to develop their understanding of the aspects of photography and to produce their own work using traditional and digital methods.
Students study techniques related to the production of photographic images, learning an appreciation of viewpoint, composition, aperture, ISO, depth of field, shutter speed and movement, as well as the appropriate use of the camera, lenses, filters and lighting. Students are taught how to develop their work digitally and through different art techniques and materials.
The NEA (Coursework) will be based on an idea, issue, concept or theme and will require students to produce a personal and meaningful response to a set brief and objectives. Students will explore connections with contemporary or traditional artists, consider the intended audience and produce a written commentary to support their portfolio.
Assessment
This is a linear course. This means that students opting for an A Level in this subject will be committing to a two-year linear course with all units assessed during Year 13 (60% portfolio, 40% practical exam).
Assessment is made up of two compulsory and externally moderated components:
- Component 1 is set by the school and is an internally assessed extended project including a written element.
- Component 2 is set by the exam board and comprises an extended project and a 15-hour practical exam (workshop-based), also internally assessed.
Entry Requirements
Previous experience with cameras and a GCSE Grade 5 in an Art & Design based subject (Art, Fine Art, Graphic Communication, 3D Design, Photography or Textile Design) is required.
Students will have access to the school’s digital camera equipment but are encouraged to use their own equipment where appropriate.
