Supporting Ukraine

As a mark of respect for all those who have lost their lives and as a gesture of solidarity with the millions who are suffering as a consequence of the war, the school will, for a period of time, fly the Ukrainian flag above the Heritage Garden.

In these difficult times, it is perhaps useful to reflect on the words of WH Auden (1907-73) who, writing at a time of great uncertainty and fear in his poem ‘September 1, 1939’, called on ‘the Just’ to ‘show an affirming flame’, saying that:

‘…dotted everywhere…

points of light

Flash out wherever the Just

Exchange their messages:’

By displaying the flag, and expressing our commitment to peace and democracy and our support for the plight of refugees throughout the world, we want to contribute a little flash of light in these dark times. How apt for a school whose motto is Ad Lucem (‘Towards the light’).
