Beginners Latin starts in Year 9 and there is one lesson a week offered either during the lunch break or after school. Students start reading the Cambridge Latin Course Book I, which provides an introduction to the language for beginners. Stories from the book are used as a basis to study the relevant grammar and vocabulary, and online resources are also used in class. Students also learn about different aspects of Roman culture; in particular daily life and the city of Pompeii.
No prior knowledge of Latin or the Roman world is required
Teaching and Learning Styles
A wide variety of approaches are used in lessons; for example discussion of the origin of Latin words and comparisons between Latin and modern languages, group translations, acting out stories, gapfill exercises, and the use of online games and activities. Learning the language focuses primarily on reading and translating as there is no written or spoken element, so students will build on their skills of translation and analysing sentences.
