In Design and Technology in Years 7 & 8 students spend one double lesson per week, for term per year in each of Product Design, Food & Nutrition and Fashion & Textiles.
Students learn how to confidently and safely use a sewing machine to create a range of decorative textile techniques and construction processes. They use these skills to design an original, scary and cuddly monster product that they develop and then make their final design. Students are also taught about the characteristics of cotton, felt, fleece and fake fur.
Students in Year 8 experience a course that incorporates cultural patterns and students reference the work of contemporary designers and artists to inspire and inform their design work. Students develop their own unique repeat pattern and this is sublimation printed onto polyester fabric. Students then design and make a product from this. Students explore a range of Art Textiles techniques and these are mounted into their own unique sketchbooks.
Students are taught in mixed ability groups of 23 students.
Students in Fashion & Textiles are assessed according to Art Textiles criteria.
