Spotlight on… Dance

Published 17 February

Welcome to our new ‘Spotlight On’ feature. We have decided to focus on a different department each month and share with you just some of the learning, innovation and fun that is happening all the time here at St Bart’s.

Dance at St Bart’s is part of the vibrant Expressive Arts Faculty (Bart’s Arts) and the department are passionate about inspiring students to develop their creative, physical, emotional and intellectual capacity through the power of dance.

Last week, Year 7s at the very start of their learning journey were to be found performing their own choreography inspired by the Syrian Refugee Crisis. Their excellent performances were filmed during lessons as part of their Unit 3 assessment, in which students learnt how to use Actions, Relationships, Dynamics and Space (RADS) to effectively portray different characters, narratives and emotions. Here are some of their dances.

At the same time, and in the final stages of their journey with us here at St Bart’s, we were able to capture A Level dance students, Bertie, Rhianne and Ruby, working extremely hard in the studio to perfect their final exam performances, an original piece of group choreography. Miss Warnes, Head of Dance, says: “Dance is such a rich subject, developing skills such as creativity, team working, communication and problem solving. Whether we are introducing the subject to our Year 7s, or working on critical appreciation skills and original performances at GCSE or A Level, we hope that the experiences we offer here at St Bart’s inspire a lifelong joy and appreciation for dance.”

The Dance department has a lively calendar including the annual Dance show, House Dance competitions, specialist workshops and co-curricular clubs. To find out more about these opportunities and the student journey visit the Dance Department microsite or keep informed with ne
