St Bart’s Welcomes Commonwealth Torch

Published 14 July 2022

On Wednesday 6 July, James Mandry and Maxine Smiles Cooke, School Sport Network Managers from West Berkshire Schools Sports Network, received a warm welcome from St Bart’s Year 7 students and staff as they carried the Schools Sports Network Commonwealth Torch from The Willink School to St Bart’s. The energetic pair covered 18 local schools over the course of the day to complete the relay!

The students lined the school’s entrance to clap and cheer as two of our Year 10 Sports Leaders, Ellie and Aidan, ran the torch through the school grounds before returning it to James and Maxine for the onward journey to Park House School.

The relay celebrates the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which will take place later this month in Birmingham. It is almost exactly ten years since four former members of St Bart’s staff (Mr Hart, Mr McGall, Mr Deam and Mr Gibbons), marked the 2012 Olympics in similar fashion by carrying a torch from Newbury Clock Tower to Park House School.

The torch relay was followed by a community event at Northcroft Leisure Centre, which was supported by our Year 10 Sports Leaders. The event was a fun way for students to get closer to the Commonwealth Games and for local schools to the feel part of this festival of sport.
