BartholoNews, our school newsletter goes out weekly to staff, students and parents/carers, with a circulation of over 4800. We are looking for a BartholoNews title design for the school year 2024/2025. Last year the winning student design (below) was by Mavis in Year 13. The new winning design will head up our weekly newsletter throughout the new school year and will include a by-line for the student designer. You will also win a certificate to include in your portfolio of work and a £30 Amazon voucher.

Alex’s Phenomenal Achievement

St Bart’s are exceptionally proud of Alex (13E3) who took part in the UK Chemistry Olympiad and achieved the highest score in the country for a non-grammar/non-private school student. He is also in the top 35 in the country! In all, there were 15 students who took part in the Round 1 competition with 10 achieving certificates: Gold – Alex Scourfield (Y13), Jonathan Kelly (Y13), William Bloodworth (Y13) Silver – Ed Hearn (Y13), Eli Green (Y13), Mohammad Jaffer Andagi (Y13), Oli Butler (Y13) Bronze – Sam Dennis (Y12), Samuel White (Y12), Vaibavi Lakshmi Narayanan (Y12)

Curnock Wins House Drama!

The annual House Drama competition returned to our stage last week with the Houses battling it out to impress us with their productions! Each House performed a piece written and directed by Year 12 students and performed by Year 8 and Year 10 actors. Curnock were the winners, here’s what some of the winning team had to say…  "We found the experience of doing House Drama an incredibly fulfilling experience. Working with a talented cast of Year 10s (and Alfie, our only Year 8) we were able to create a winning piece which was funny, engaging and magical.

Year 9 Legoland Trip

  On Friday 26 April, Year 9 Computing students went on an exciting trip to Legoland! They attended a robotics workshop where they built their own robots and coded movements, sounds and light using a coding programming called SpikePrime. The students thoroughly enjoyed this and were able to put their coding skills to the test! They were tasked to get their robot from one point on a miniature Legoland map to another. When students did not have a workshop they enjoyed the rides! We were lucky enough to be one of the few groups to enjoy the new racer rollercoaster which was great fun!

Young Enterprise Final Success

Our Young Enterprise company Flame Fortune participated in the Young Enterprise area final on 22 April at Oracle, Thames Valley Business Park, Reading. This event is the culmination of all the work that students have put into the program since September. Students set up an exhibition stand, which was visited by a team of judges, and they were questioned on their business activity, the processes they followed and the skills they have developed as a Young Enterprise participant.

Krakow Trip

Just before the Easter break, 32 students from across the Year 12 cohort visited Krakow to develop their knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust. Accompanied by Mr Owen, Mrs Lane and Miss May, students began their tour at Kazimierz, which since the 12th century has been known as Krakow’s Jewish Quarter.

Iceland Trip

On 1 April, 40 geography students accompanied by Miss Brenton, Mr Langton, Mrs Roberts and Mr Wilder set of for Iceland to explore the country’s landscapes. After landing, we went to the FlyOver Iceland experience, which was a virtual reality immersive tour around some of Iceland’s most impressive landscapes. After being a bit sceptical to begin with, everyone thoroughly enjoyed it and said it was a brilliant way to start the trip. Over the course of the next three days, we experienced the best of South Iceland, travelling around the Golden Circle seeing amazing waterfalls and geysers, as well as a brilliant walk up to the Solheimajokull glacier.

Year 7 Football

The Year 7 boys' football team beat Trinity School, 7-1. They are undefeated in West Berkshire. This means they are league champions in their first season at St Bart's! Player of the match was Tommy, who scored a hat trick. Goals were also scored by Evan (2), Zach (1) and Alex (1). Congratulations and well done to every boy who has played for the school this term.

Well Done Harvey

Published 22 April 2024 Earlier in the year, Patterson House nominated Harvey (10P2) for Newbury Town Young Person’s Civic Award, based on his continuous fundraising for Patterson charity, Guide Dogs. Harvey was invited to attend the Awards, and although he didn’t win the main award, he was noted as ‘One to Watch’. Harvey is our highest single fundraiser within Patterson and we are very proud of his efforts and enthusiasm.

Badminton Festivals

At the end of last term, we hosted two Badminton Festivals. The KS4 students played Kennet School and Denefield School and the KS3 students played only Kennet School. All students had a fantastic time, playing a lot of badminton and getting more experience in playing competitive matches. Well done to all involved!
