Elephant on Parade – The Festival of Light

December 19, 2023

The annual Festival of Light has become something of a spectacular Christmas tradition in Newbury. Many of you will have been there on Sunday to see the amazing procession of hundreds of twinkling lanterns travelling through Newbury town centre. In the build up to the event, many schools, community groups and members of the public were busy constructing some amazing structures to parade and, as you would expect, St Bart’s was no exception!

We absolutely LOVE this amazing elephant created in St Bart’s Art Club by talented Year 9 students, Phoebe, Ffion and Gamya. We hope they enjoyed the procession and we thank them for sharing this great image.

78 St Bart’s students received a Gold certificate for achieving a top 10% score in their respective categories and therefore are now invited to participate in the Oxford University Computing Challenge (OUCC). The OUCC is taking place between 15 – 19th January 2024. This event encourages students to develop their skills further and produce programmed solutions to computational thinking problems. We wish them all the best!

Year 7 Christmas Party

December 11, 2023

Earlier this week, we held our Year 7 Christmas Party. As we draw to the end of our Year 7s’ first term at St Bart’s, it was a great chance for students to celebrate all their many successes from the last term, whether this was in lessons, clubs, the many school competitions, making new friends or even just conquering their timetable and finding their way around school!

Year 7 took over the school hall and were resplendent in their Christmas jumpers and sparkles. They were joined by many of our House staff, Year 7 tutors and our Assistant Headteacher (KS3) Miss Thorne. Students enjoyed some great party food and music was provided by Mr Edens on the DJ Decks. Thank you to the many House Captains and Barts Ambassadors and staff who organised the party and enabled it to take place. It was great to see everyone having fun on the dance floor.

We hope all our Year 7s had a good time and are enjoying being part of the St Bart’s community.

Alternative Olympics Festival

November 27, 2023

A huge thank you to the Year 10 Sports Leaders who supported the Alternative Olympics Festival that we hosted at St Bart’s.

This inclusive festival saw 11 Primary Schools take part, which included Boccia, Kurling, Seated Volleyball and Archery. The Primary schools had a fantastic time, which was largely due to the excellent support of the Sports Leaders. Mr Mandry who led the event said, “This event is only a success if there are brilliant leaders helping to inspire the younger pupils.” St Bart’s leaders were brilliant, thank you!

Children in Need At St Bart’s

November 23, 2023

Last Friday, we held a Non Uniform Day, Staff Dodgeball Competition, a cake sale and a House ‘Cover Pudsey in Coins’ Competition – all in aid of Children in Need. Patterson took home the double – claiming both victory in the Staff Dodgeball and ‘Cover Pudsey in Coins’ Competition. Patterson’s Pudsey was covered in £86 by the end of the day! Thank you to everyone who baked, donated, ducked and dodged balls and took part. As a school, we raised an amazing £2,774 for Children in Need and had a lot of fun doing so!

Sixth Form Winter Ball

November 16, 2023

Last Friday, the Sixth Form hosted its annual Winter Ball. The event is a hugely popular fixture in the Sixth Form social calendar and was a sell-out. The 2023 theme was Winter Wonderland and the hall was dressed in its best sparkly finery, as were the students. Bad Rep and a DJ set from Alleyne provided the tunes. The night raised over £500 for the Sixth Form charity, Sebastian’s Action Trust, and was a brilliant success.

A huge thank you to the Winter Ball Committee led by Sophie Casey, Nya Taank and Bella Warner, and to all the staff, particularly the Sixth Form team, who supported the event.

Half Price Book Fair

November 16, 2023

At St Bart’s, we’re big on reading – in the classroom and for pleasure. On Tuesday 21 November the Scholastic Half Price Book Fair will visit St Bart’s. The pop-up mobile shop will offer a fantastic selection of discounted books and students will be able to create their own Wish List to take home.

We are also giving parents the opportunity to browse the Book Fair after school. Parents are invited to join us in the Hub (or library if the weather is wet) between 3.10pm-4.15pm on Tuesday to view and, should if you wish, to purchase the books. Please note purchases will be by card only or, alternatively, can ordered online after visiting the Fair at www.bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/pay.

Sixth Form Economics Conference

November 15, 2023

On Tuesday 31 October, the Economics Department took 30 students to a conference ‘The Post Pandemic, Post Brexit Guide to the UK Economy’ in London. This conference was a fantastic opportunity for students to get an insight into the real world of Economics and the links with the world of politics. Students listened to various examples of how the theory they have learned is being applied in the real world.

They also were able to hear about some new thinking in Economics, which considers the impact of economic growth on the planet.

The speakers at the event were –

  • Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, Shadow Secretary Northern Ireland
  • Harriett Baldwin MP, Treasury Committee
  • Dr Charles Smith, University of Wales, A Level Chief Examiner
  • Professor Alan Manning, LSE
  • Professor Kate Raworth, Doughnut Economics
  • Mark Littlewood, Institute of Economic Affairs
  • Vicky Price, Centre for Economics and Business Research
  • Carl Emmerson, Institute of Fiscal Studies

“It was a very enriching experience that gave me a first-hand view of what Economics was like in the real world. Doughnut Economics by Kate Raworth was, for me, the most interesting, as she gave a new perspective into how we should define economic growth in the 21st century.”

William Makant (13C6)

“I found the Economics conference to be an eye-opening experience into the applications of Economics in the real world; having the insight into how studying Economics pays off provided an outlook into the subject which we, as a class, would not have seen otherwise. We were given an in-depth explanation of the use of the subject and its many different possible effects on our futures.”

Olympic Visitors

October 10, 2023

At our recent Open Evening, our Year 10 Living for Sport group had a great opportunity to work alongside athlete Mentors Toby Garbett and Susie Dear.

Toby has longstanding links to our school and as a previous Olympic rower and Tri athlete, he is always an inspirational figure for our students. This year, Toby introduced us to Susie Dear who is a current GB rower and is presently working towards a place in the Paris 2024 Olympics. Fingers crossed she is successful in gaining a place.

Both Toby and Susie worked on team building activities, including rowing machines, with our Living for Sport group and gave them an insight into working towards challenges. They also encouraged many of the visiting Year 6 students to try out the rowing machines.

A huge thank you to Toby and Susie for giving up their time and providing an excellent opportunity for both our students and our visitors.
