Core Mathematics
Core Mathematics is all about using maths to solve the kinds of real-life problems that you’ll meet when studying, in the workplace, and in life more generally.
Alongside expanding knowledge of the biological world, students also develop many transferable skills, such as researching, problem-solving and critical thinking, and an understanding of scientific methods, data analysis, observation, correlations and causal relationships. Qualifications in Biology open up many exciting career paths in human and veterinary medicine, as well as other medical related careers such as dentistry, optometry, physiotherapy, the pharmaceutical sciences, forensic science, biomedical and biological sciences, and environmental health and food sciences.

Course Description
Core Mathematics is all about using maths to solve the kinds of real-life problems that you’ll meet when studying, in the workplace, and in life more generally. In Core Mathematics, you will build on the knowledge you gained at GCSE, but also learn some new topics, such as Personal Finance (Tax, National Insurance and Student Loans).
Studying Core Mathematics helps you to develop skills that will support the quantitative aspects of other courses such as Biology, Economics, Geography and Psychology. The skills used include exploring and analysing data, constructing and interpreting graphs, and working with calculations and formulae.
The qualification is also looked upon favourably by many Universities alongside your other subjects. The mathematical demands do not stretch to a requirement for A Level Mathematics, but will consolidate students’ mathematical understanding, build their confidence and competence in applying mathematical techniques to solve a range of problems and introduce them to new techniques and concepts that will prepare them for further study and future employment within a broad range of academic, professional and technical fields.
Core Mathematics will enable students to:
- develop mathematical modelling, evaluating and reasoning skills
- solve problems some of which will not be well defined and may not have a unique solution
- solve substantial and real life problems
- use ICT as an exploratory tool for developing mathematical understanding and when solving problems
- develop skills in the communication, selection, use and interpretation of their mathematics
- enjoy mathematics and develop confidence in using mathematics
Assessment
This is a one year linear course. This means that students opting for a Level 3 Certificate in Core Mathematics (Mathematical Studies) will be examined in two 90 minute papers at the end of one year of study.
Entry Requirements
Grade 4 or higher in GCSE Mathematics is required. To be successful, you need to be confident in applying your GCSE knowledge.
Students can select Core Mathematics alongside 3 other A Level/BTEC courses.
