School Officers
Our School Officers ensure that Student Voice remains at the heart of school life. Together they drive student involvement in school improvement and encompass our BARTS Values, by being brave, ambitious, respectful, trustworthy and safe. School Officers give back to our community and improve the experience for all of our students.

Our School Officers consist of:
- Head Students (Summer Term Year 12, Autumn Term and Spring Term Year 13)
- House Captains (Summer Term Year 12, Autumn Term and Spring Term Year 13)
- Vice House Captains (Summer Term Year 10, Autumn Term and Spring Term Year 11)
- Subject Representatives (Summer Term Year 12, Autumn Term and Spring Term Year 13)
Head Students
Being appointed as a Head Student is one of the school’s highest honours. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to make a difference to their school and to gain valuable leadership experience. Being awarded a position in our Head Student team is a significant achievement as candidates take part in a rigorous application process, including an application statement, hustings (addressing Year 12) as well as group and individual interviews with the Leadership Team.
Our Head Students take the lead in implementing School Officer agreed projects. They are responsible for formally sharing the views of students and identifying priorities with the Headteacher and Sixth Form Leadership Team. They are required to represent and speak on behalf of the school at various public events during the year.
House Captains
Our sixth form House Captains have responsibilities across the fields of sports, arts & fundraising and mentoring. This can involve supporting and encouraging our Year 7-11 students in their studies and co-curricular activities, taking the lead with various school fundraising and community initiatives, and organising and driving involvement in a huge number of House competitions throughout the year.
Our House Captains also play a vital part in organising and delivering a large number of events, such as the Open Evening, Awards Evening and sixth form socials.
Vice House Captains
Our Vice House Captains are Key Stage 4 (Year 10-11) students who act as role models to others in the school through their personal standard of behaviour and can be identified by their purple Vice House Captain tie. As with our sixth form House Captains, Vice House Captains have responsibilities across the fields of sports, arts, community & fundraising and mentoring, and are required to provide support with School and House events.
Vice House Captains are involved with our Year 6 Transition events and helping Year 7 to settle in during their first term with the school. They are often called to support the Leadership Team with visitor tours of the school and with break time duties, supporting younger students and reporting of poor behaviour to members of staff.
Subject Representatives
Subject Representatives represent their subject at Open Evenings and Year 11 assemblies. They coordinate student feedback to teachers and each is a figurehead for the subject. They often mentor and support younger years.
St Cassian’s – School Officers Weekend
Each year the newly elected School Officer team (Head Students and House Captains) come together for the annual fun-packed camping trip to St Cassian’s Centre in Kintbury. The weekend includes a local history and landmark treasure hunt and focuses on developing teamwork skills by challenging students to plan, prepare and present (and of course eat!) some delicious three-course meals with the BBQs. The weekend is also an opportunity to spend valuable time working on School Officer priorities for the coming year.
