Sixth Form Learning & Enrichment
At St Bart’s Sixth Form, we are proud of our academic reputation and our offering – designed to promote skills for life and a wider understanding of the world.
Learning
We offer a fantastic number of subjects taught by subject specialists in well equipped and modern facilities. These include A Level and BTEC courses, as well as an Extended Project Qualification and a Level 3 Core Mathematics qualification for students studying subjects with significant Mathematics elements such as Sciences, Economics, Geography, and Psychology.
The Sixth Form also offers Stretch and Challenge as an optional course. This is open to all students and taught for an hour a week in a timetabled lesson. The course teaches critical thinking and supports thinking and writing skills:
- The ability to read carefully and critically,
- How to analyse and evaluate
- What makes a coherent argument
- Flaws in arguments
- Precision in the selection of evidence presented to support points
- Precision, clarity and facility of writing
University Applications
We have an exceptional record of getting students into university. We understand that applying for university can be a daunting process and so we guide our students through every step of the process. All students are provided with a UCAS login and we have a proven system in place to ensure that every section of a student’s application is completed correctly and on time. The Sixth Form team, tutors and subject teachers work with students to help ensure their application really stands out.
If a student is considering making an early entry for a competitive university/course, such as Oxbridge, Medicine, Dentistry and Vet Med, then they are able to join our Early Entrant Programme.
The Early Entrant Programme provides guidance on areas such as
- choosing the right A levels;
- making the right course and university choice;
- wider reading and super-curricular studies;
- work experience support;
- writing a personal statement;
- making a UCAS application;
- support for aptitude tests and submission of written work;
- preparation for interviews;
- support following the decision process.
For Medics, the Sixth Form provides support for reflection and showing commitment to the vocation, as well as practice MMI preparation.
We are lucky to have experienced teaching staff, as well as alumni with personal experience of applications, to support these kinds of applications.
Apprenticeships and Employability
We also support high numbers of students each year into employment or apprenticeships. All students benefit from an Employability Skills and Careers Programme throughout the school year, including talks from external professionals designed to prepare students for the world of work. Students are assisted in securing work experience placements (5 days off timetable towards the end of Year 12) or volunteering opportunities and have access to software designed to enable them to better research careers and identify university courses and apprenticeships.
Personalised Learning
Personalised Learning provides a specialist learning provision to support additional academic needs through a variety of one to one and small group sessions and programmes. Students access Personalised Learning when additional educational needs are identified through their application and formal assessments.
Personal Development Programme
All young people need to develop the skills and understanding necessary to make a success of sixth form studies and their future preparation for life beyond sixth form. Likewise, they need an opportunity to discuss the most important and relevant issues of the day which impact on their lives, from environmental concerns, to issues of morality, social exclusion and equality. Our Personal Development Programme combines all of these elements to help our students understand their place in the world..
