Sports
St Bart’s has excellent provision for Sport which plays an important part in school life. We want to encourage students to make physical activities a central part of their life, both in and out of school, so that they lead happy and healthy lives.
St Bart’s has an impressive sports complex including two sets of boys’ and girls’ changing rooms, a theory classroom with interactive whiteboard, a gymnasium, an extended length sports hall (basketball, volleyball, badminton, cricket nets), Eton fives courts, a floodlit multi-use games area which is used for netball and tennis, and a full size synthetic turf pitch which is also fully floodlit and is marked out for football, lacrosse, hockey and tennis (13 courts in total).
There are grass pitches for lacrosse, football, rugby, rounders, cricket (artificial) and softball situated on the main school site, as well as a 400m athletics track with discus cage and long jump pits at Browns Meadow, and several more football (including 9-a-side) and rugby pitches at Enborne Road. Both areas are approximately ½ mile from the school.
St Bart’s has adopted the West Berkshire Co-curricular Provision Programme, which is focused around mass participation and the broadest possible sports offer. There really is a sport for every student at St Bart’s with an impressive range of co-curricular sports clubs.
Sports play a significant role in the school’s annual House Championship with the House Sport Shield fiercely contested. Inter-House events take place across a huge range of sports from cross country to rugby, football, netball, hockey and dodgeball to name but a few! These events are run by the PE department for all year groups, many at ‘A’ and ‘B’ team levels.
Featuring track and field events for Years 7-11, our annual school Sports Days take place over 2 days in the summer term. On the second day, our whole school community converges in their House groups on the Luker Field to support our track athletes.
The school also has a strong tradition of inter-school sport and has a demanding fixture list both in mid-week and Saturday fixtures. The school is particularly successful in rugby, lacrosse, football, netball, cricket, athletics and tennis, with both junior and senior teams competing to high standards.
As part of the KS4 Extra Programme, in which KS4 students are given the opportunity to take part in a variety of enrichment activities on alternate Friday afternoons, St Bart’s offer a number of sports-led options including Fitness, Fives, Living for Sport and Sports Leaders.
Students gain further opportunities for leadership training, and officiating at school events. Our Sports Leaders have key roles in the running of the Berkshire Schools Games and opening ceremonies.
School Sports Coordinator
We are unique in that we have maintained a School Sports Coordinator role within the PE Department. Through the work of our SSCO we have strong links with Primary schools, external coaches and our Youth Sports Trust Living for Sport Athlete Mentors, in particular Toby Garbett (Olympic Rower and Triathlete) and Alex Danson (Olympic Great Britain Hockey Gold Medalist).
