Sport (BTEC)

Sport (BTEC) provides a vocational introduction to the world of sport. It incorporates important aspects of the industry, such as fitness testing and training for sport and exercise, practical sports performance and sports leadership.

Students develop and apply their knowledge, while also developing a range of relevant practical, communication and technical skills, such as team working, working to a brief and a deadline, presenting information effectively, accurately completing administrative tasks and processes.

BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Sport (Year 10-11)

Course Description

The principal aim of Sport (BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award) is that students gain an understanding of the sport sector by applying theory to practical situations. This is achieved through a variety of approaches including practical participation, case studies, research, controlled assessments and exams..

In Sport (BTEC) students need to participate in 1 sport to a competitive level. This can be either a team or individual sport.

Assessment

Sport (BTEC) is split into three assessed components:

Component 1: Preparing Participants to Take Part in Physical Activity (Studied in Year 10, set assessment in March during Year 10, worth 30%)

Explore types and provision of sport and physical activity for different types of participant
Examine equipment and technology required for participants to use when taking part in sport and physical activity
Be able to prepare participants to take part in sport and physical activity

Component 2: Taking Part and Improving Other Participants Sporting Performance (Studied in Year 10, set assessment in October during Year 11, worth 30%)

Understand how different components of fitness are used in different physical activities
Be able to participate in sport and understand the roles and responsibilities of officials
Demonstrate ways to improve participants’ sporting techniques

Component 3: Developing Fitness to Improve Other Participants Performance in Sport and Physical Activity (Studied in Year 10/11, examined in May during Year 11, worth 40%)

Components 1 and 2 are assessed on evidence produced by each candidate that demonstrates their knowledge and understanding of the subject content. This will be in a variety of forms depending on the topic, for example a presentation, essays, practical performance and/or leading sessions. These are assessed in set windows under controlled conditions. Component 3 will be assessed by an externally marked synoptic exam in the year 11 GCSE exam period.

Course Description

BTEC Level 3 National Certificate in Sport is made up of four units of work. Students will cover:

Anatomy and Physiology
Fitness, Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Wellbeing
Professional Development in the Sports Industry
Practical Sports Performance

The course includes regular assignment briefs with content taught both in the classroom and in a practical environment. There is a focus on vocational learning and teaching approaches, including a cross-section of presentations, case study research, debates and demonstrations.

Students are encouraged to work both independently and in groups, and will be required to record coursework evidence, reflect on learning and analyse the impact of that learning on work.

Assessment

The BTEC Level 3 National Certificate in Sport comprises four units of which two are externally assessed.

Professional Development in the Sports Industry (Coursework & Practical Assessment)
Practical Sports Performance (Coursework & Practical Assessment)

Entry Requirements

Previous study in sport is not required. GCSE PE or BTEC Sport (Level 1/Level 2) is not required.
