Fives First Cooper Cup Competition

June 30, 2025

Last Friday saw the inaugural Fives Cooper Cup Competition at St Bart’s; the splendid cup has been kindly donated by David Cooper – a long-time supporter of Fives at the school.

Despite the very hot conditions, eight year 8 students took part and soon got the hang of the timed games in the round robin stage, with some excellent and competitive Fives being played.

A totalling of individual scores after the round robin stage produced the draw for the semi-final stage; one semi-final went to a dramatic golden point, with the score being level after 15 minutes play.

The keenly contested Final was between Freddie and Gabriel v Oscar and Ethan, and was watched by a good sized crowd from Newbury Fives Club. The final also went to a golden point, Oscar and Ethan coming out as winners; congratulations to them and well played to all, who were a credit to the school and the game of Fives.

Fives continues until the end of term on Wednesday lunchtimes and Friday after school, with coaching provided by Newbury Fives Club; new players are always welcome and should sign up with Mr Talbot.

Fives is the greatest game played on a court and St Bart’s are very fortunate to have three great courts.

Cricket Update

June 26, 2025

Year 7 Cricket

Year 7 played their second league match, hosting The Downs at Brown’s Meadow. The Downs won the toss and put St Bart’s into bat first. The team has been rotated each match, and Bart’s scored a respectable 76 runs, for the loss of 8 wickets. The Downs replied with 106 runs of their allotted 75 balls, for 4 wickets. Andrew Antony Rosewelt made a catch from behind the stumps (bowled by James Hale), Matthew Brown bowled one wicket, Joe Shadrach ran out one batsmen (bowled by Joshi Hunt), and James Hale bowled the fourth wicket taken by St Bart’s. Player of the match was Thomas Lee Rodriguez, for his batting and his positive teamwork and encouragement in the field.

 Year 8 Cricket

St Bart’s won against The Downs in their penultimate game of the cricket season. Bart’s batted first and posted a score of 111/5. The Downs were then unsuccessful with chasing down the total scoring 72/9. Players of the match were Tom and Joe L for their batting. Joe L scored 14 runs and Tom retired on 20. Sibi, Joe R and Freddie P were also named players of the match for their bowling. Joe R took 2 wickets and Freddie and Sibi both took 3 wickets.

1st XI cricket: 10 out of Y10s for effort

The next generation of 1st XI cricketers announced themselves in some style against Didcot’s St Birinus, albeit in a losing cause. As the public exam season drew to a close, there could have been no sterner test for Yudeesh and Luke, coming together at 9-3 in the third over after an Oxfordshire U18 left-arm pacer had ripped out our Y11 top three with a display of toe-crunching Yorkers redolent of prime Wasim Akram. With resolute character and excellent technique, the Y10 pair saw him and his Kent U19 colleague off and then set about the second-string bowling.

Luke’s rasping square cut was only pipped for shot of day by Yudeesh’s back-foot drive, the full face of the blade flashing in the direction of point. When Luke unluckily fell to a catch that was juggled at deep mid-wicket with more comic dexterity than something out of Gifford’s Circus (back touring this summer, folks), they had put on 73 in 10 overs, forcing the Akram-esque captain to bring himself back on. Yudeesh would continue to resist until he was within two of a splendid 50, but was snaffled on the off-drive by that Kentish close fielder. (It’s doubtful a lesser player would have clung on.) St Birinus rightly won the day by 50 runs, and passed what was effectively an audition for joining the Toby Radford Trophy competition with flying colours.

They accelerated brilliantly from 70-1 off 10 overs to 172-6, with their No 5 enjoying himself immensely, with 34 off 11 balls. Y11 Archie was the ultimate beneficiary of the end of the innings mayhem with 4-8 in two overs, but Y10 bowlers Sidney and Jimmy had the moments, while Ed was ebullient and energetic behind the stumps. It was great to see Y13 James return at short notice and be straight on the money with his leg-spin, too. All in all, much potential for the future.

English Schools Athletics Track and Field Competition

June 16, 2025

Congratulations to the Junior and Inter students who took part in the Schools Cup Athletics competition on Friday 16 May.

Girls

With combined teams of Years 7 and 8 and Years 9 and 10 girls, they were all looking forward to a day of competing against a variety of schools in the region and hoping to score some good points in their events which would then culminate in some good team scores.

Junior Girls

The Junior girls had a successful start in the track events and at half time were in 3rd place. However, having struggled with some of the field events, their finishing position was 5th out of 9 schools but they did have an impressive team points score of 303 points. As a team, the girls worked hard to score as many points as possible and should be very proud of their achievements, as we have just found out that they have reached a B Regional Final on Wednesday 18 June at Winchester. Very well done to you all and thank you! Outstanding performances include:

Penny Prowse who in 100m with a time of 12.9 scored 30 points and in her Long Jump achieved a distance of 4m 47 which gave her 20 points – outstanding!

Avvi Hadadi 300m with a time of 47.8 scoring 17 points and in her Long Jump achieved 4m 12 and 16 points.

Tilly Clare 1500m with a time of 5. 44 scoring 22points and in her Javelin threw 18.02 m scoring 17 points

Summer Wrzesinski 800m with a time of 2.54 scoring 19 points.

Intermediate Girls

The Intermediate girls had a little more difficulty in getting a team sorted due to injury but showed their strength of character and resilience when they were prepared to compete not necessarily in their favourite events!! Thank you so much! As with the Junior Girls the Inter girls finished in 5th position but had an impressive final point score of 324 points. Again, the girls should be very proud of their achievements, as they too have qualified for the Regional B Final on Wednesday 18 June at Winchester. Very well done to you all and thank you for being so accommodating with your events!

Outstanding performances include:

Anna Hall 1500m with a time of 5.22 scoring 23 points and in her Javelin threw a PB of 22. 60m scoring 17 points – excellent performances!

With beautiful weather and a superb track and field area, it certainly set the scene for a good day of athletics.

Girls
Both the U15 and U17 girls performed superbly despite some girls not taking part in their preferred events to ensure the teams were full ( thank you Year 10s in particular, for all your support and willingness to step outside your comfort zone to ensure the team was full).
In both age groups the girls finished in 2nd place out of 12 schools which was a tremendous achievement. Downe House managed to pip us to first place in both age groups! Very well done to you all and thank you for all your hard work!

PB and National Ranking For Oscar

June 12, 2025

We recently reported on Oscar’s (9C2) success at the Berkshire County Championships. Last weekend, Oscar took it to the next level at the South of England Athletics Championships at Crystal Palace athletics stadium.

He competed in the U15 Hammer competition and came third overall with a new PB of 40.34m! At the moment of writing this it puts him the 13th best in the country! Well done Oscar, that is amazing.

Year 10 Rounders

June 10, 2025

Our Year 10 Rounders teams played their second round of fixtures in the West Berkshire Rounders league just before half-term. Our A team played The Downs first, narrowly losing 12.5-10.5 after some excellent fielding in The Downs’ second innings, with Amelia getting player of the match. Our B team played Park House at the same time, losing 11-6.5, with Ivy getting player of the match. To end the evening, our A team had to play our B team in a very close game, with the As narrrowly beating the Bs by one rounder with the final score being 9.5-8.5. Orlaith and Ivy were the respective players of the match. A huge well done to all 20 players who represented the school, including a few Year 9s who stepped up to help us when needed!
