Girls’ Area Athletics Results

May 23, 2024

Congratulations to both the Junior Girls, Years 8 & 9, and the Inter Girls, Year 10, who took part in the recent Area Athletics competition at Palmer Park. There were some outstanding performances which culminated in two excellent overall team positions. The Junior Girls were placed 2nd out of 12 schools, with Downe House School winning, and in the Inter Girls we were placed 1st out of 11 schools.

Very well done to all athletes and thank you for your hard work and determination on the day.

Special mention goes to the following girls who having achieved 1st or 2nd place as an individual in their event and have now been selected to represent the County Championships on Saturday 8 June: Ffion Pritchard – long jump, Hazel Cook – discus, Beth Maclean – 800m, Isla Clare – 1500m, Olive Muir – 1500m. Good Luck to you all.

We look forward to bring you the boys’ results after half term.

Flame Fortune at Young Enterprise Final

May 23, 2024

On Thursday 16 June, our Young Enterprise company, Flame Fortune, were one of eight teams competing at the regional final in Buckinghamshire. They were one of two companies representing Berkshire, having won at the area final in April. The other teams came from Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

Since setting up last September, Flame Fortune have completed all aspects of running their own enterprise. They have to come up with their own idea, sell shares to raise capital, conduct research, source supplies, manufacture the product, promote the company, participate in selling events and manage the finances. Alongside this they have participated in a range of Young Enterprise competitions – Dragon’s Den, Best Business Plan, Best Trade Stand (which was judged at the Young Enterprise trade fair in Bracknell), Best Company Report (which they won!).

Managing their participation in this programme, alongside their A Level studies, is a fantastic learning experience for the students. Skills of time management, organisation, communication, resilience and patience have certainly been developed!

Fifty-two Young Enterprise companies were set up in our South Central region in September. Although Flame Fortune did not win through to the National final, to be one of the final eight in the region is a brilliant achievement. They are the first St Bart’s team to do this! All finalists were presented with a trophy to recognise this achievement.

Well done to all the team – Sakshi Kamra, Sreelakshmi Sreejith, Barney Owen, Alec Dukes, Robert Lambert, Mikey Cloete, Tom Grimbleby, Laura Swanson and Jennifer Bibin, for a great effort!

Fast Finish for Ten Tors

May 23, 2024

Over the weekend of 11/12 May, St Bart’s students took part in the 35 and 45 mile Ten Tors Challenge on Dartmoor. Having spent Thursday completing a kit check, to military standards, and route planning, the two teams travelled to Okehampton on Friday morning. The afternoon was spent preparing packed lunches, finalising routes on maps and checking route cards, before an early night ready for the start on Saturday morning. The 5am alarm was a bit of a shock to the system, but after consuming a full cooked breakfast, the teams were ready to head to the start before 6.30am for the parachute display preceding the official start at 7.00am.

Both teams started steadily, before the 35 milers (Year 10) accelerated through the pack of teams to finally camp at their 7th Tor as the lead team on their route. The 45-milers, meanwhile, kept their steady pace through the heat of the afternoon, even adding in an extra Tor (checkpoint) not on their designated route, to camp just after their 6th Tor at 10.30pm. Both teams were up and on the move by 6.00am on Sunday. Unfortunately, Arthur, in the 35-mile team had a deep encounter with the Dartmoor bog, and lost a boot early on Sunday morning. He was forced to drop out at the next safety check, despite continuing for 5km with only one boot! The remainder of the team then continued at a pace to complete their route before midday, one of the earliest St Bart’s finishes ever. Plus it’s been 20 years since a St Bart’s team finished first on their route! The 45-milers kept those at the finish waiting a bit longer, but completed as a full team an hour inside the cut off time.

While the weather was dry and clear (unusual for Dartmoor!), the heat added its own challenge to both teams and they should be very proud of their achievements.

35-mile team: Peter Essex-Lopresti, Amos Fitch, Sam Kirby, Arthur Macgregor, Charlie Morse and Harvey Robinson.

45-mile team: Milla Brereton, Barney Owen, Annie Taylor, Willem Vrolijk, Danni Weaver and Astrid Wilson-Gignoux.

Thanks to all the staff whole helped during the training walks and event: Miss Baikie, Lt Wright, Maj Patrick, Mr Edwards, Sgt Edwards, Lt Cantwell, Mr Brooker, Dr Scourfield, Mr Talbot and Miss Wenlock.

Curnock Reach 100K!

May 22, 2024

Curnock House celebrated a special milestone as, following a donation this month of £11,500 to Newbury Cancer Care, they announced that they have now raised over £100,000 for their nominated charity.

Dr Fitter, Mrs Hamblin, Sixth Form House Captains and Curnock Year 7 students welcomed Paul Millard (Founder and President), Dave Ormrod (Chair of Trustees) and Helen Milroy (Director of Operations) from Newbury Cancer Care to present them with a cheque for this fantastic milestone figure. Also joining the presentation was Mike Hart, former House Head of Curnock who was instrumental in establishing the charity link with Curnock House. The sun shone as the party all gathered in the school’s Heritage Garden.

Curnock has been fundraising for Newbury Cancer Care since 1987. Following the cheque presentation, Dave Ormrod spoke of the work of the charity to support local people who have been diagnosed with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses. He told the students how the money raised by the school had already helped to fund the Rainbow Rooms, based at the West Berkshire Community Hospital, and of how the recent donation will further the charity’s plans to provide more of these important spaces, including a garden to be aptly named the Butterfly Room. The charity presented students with a plaque to mark the achievement.

Mike Hart spoke of his pride of his association with St Bart’s and Newbury Cancer Care, he told the gathered students how delighted he was that they were continuing to fundraise and urged them to keep up the good work and to set themselves the future target of one day hitting £150,000!

Dr Fitter said, “I am so proud of our Houses and all that our students have achieved for their nominated charities. I believe it is so important that students feel part of our community, and also that they strive to contribute to that community. From larger House Evening fundraisers to individual students raising money through cake sales or personal challenges, every penny helps and reaching this £100,000 has been a huge collective effort over the years. I hope that this achievement motivates all our students and reminds them of how we can all make a difference”

Alumni Talk: Careers in Technology

May 21, 2024

Our sincere thanks to Tom Moores (St Bart’s alumnus) who recently paid a visit to the school in order to meet with our Year 11 and Year 12 Computer Science students and advise them on careers in technology. Tom is in his third year of a BSc (Hons) Cyber Security and Forensic Computing at the University of Portsmouth and is completing a work placement at Ntegra, a specialist technology practice.

Tom spoke to our students about considering what they wanted to accomplish in the next five years. He spoke about the importance of researching the different post-18 options available to them, reflecting on what they enjoy and are good at, and about not being afraid to try new things, including work experience (paid or unpaid) in different fields. His presentation covered what soft skills employers are looking for in the technology sector, such as communication, collaboration, time management, critical thinking and adaptability. Finally, Tom gave students some tips on how to break into the industry by using networking tools and gaining new skills and certifications, as well as some ideas on job searching and building a top CV.

This was a valuable opportunity for our students. It is always fantastic to welcome back former students; their stories and advice are especially authentic and powerful. We know our students particularly appreciate hearing from those who have relatively recently sat in their seats, living the same experiences, and have now gone on to realise their ambitions – forging exciting careers. Thank you Tom, and we hope to welcome you back again soon.

If you are a former student who would be happy to support the school in this way, please do consider signing up to our alumni Future First platform and building your profile – this helps us connect with you.

 And speaking of alumni”¦

We very much enjoyed reading the recent BBC article about England Cricketer and St Bart’s alumnus, Lauren Bell, and her recent stratospheric trajectory into the women’s international game. Lauren reflects on her breakthrough year, playing for England and her desire to inspire the next generation, saying “There will be more little girls in those crowds thinking, I want to be England’s next fast bowler.” What a great role model for our students.

Goodbye Year 13!

May 15, 2024

Last week, students and staff came together to celebrate and say farewell to the exceptional Class of 2024. In a host of festivities, students belted out the anthems in a special leavers’ Karaoke followed by a brilliant BBQ and games on Wormestall Field. On their final day, our leavers graced the school with their fantastic fancy dress and questionable dance moves for the traditional leavers’ parade.

We wish our Class of 2024 all the very best for exam season and beyond. We are with you all the way!

Goodbye Year 11!

May 8, 2024

It’s that time of the year again! Year 11 Graduation took place on Friday 3 May and we were able to give our Year 11 students a moment of reflection and celebration before the start of their GCSE exams.

After spending some time on the all-important shirt signing, students took their places in the school hall to listen to some final words from Headteacher, Dr Fitter. ‘Tutee of the Tutor Group’ Awards were then handed out by our Year 11 Tutors, who have been a part of our students’ journeys since they arrived at school as new Year 7s in 2019. There was much laughter and a chance to reminisce as the last five years where captured in a fantastic photo slideshow and then students were set one last school test with a ‘guess the baby’ quiz (hint: they were all staff)! Finally, Mr Bandy, Assistant Headteacher: KS4, concluded the graduation with some special ‘KS4 Awards’, which amongst others included ‘Time to get a Watch’ Award, ‘Most Likely to be Prime Minister’ Award and ‘Most Likely to win an Oscar’ Award! After wishing all students the best of luck in their exams, everyone then headed for a celebration picnic.

We hope our Year 11s enjoyed the occasion and their gift bags. We echo Mr Bandy in wishing them all the best in their exams and thank them for all they have contributed to school life and the St Bart’s community. We look forward to welcoming many of them back to Sixth Form on September, and for those who move on to new adventures, we wish them the best of success in their new endeavours.
