Much Ado About Numbers

June 6, 2024

On Tuesday 21 May, selected Maths students went to Kennet School to hear Rob Eastaway talk about his new book, ‘Much Ado About Numbers’. They told us how they got on…

“We found this a fascinating and entertaining talk, and who would’ve known that seven is such a magical number?! We saw so many connections between Shakespeare, Maths and so many other various subjects. Shakespeare helped contribute loads of new words to the dictionary, introducing ‘orange’ (referring to the colour), ‘apostrophe’ and ‘road’!

We saw how difficult it was to add roman numerals together, and we now feel so grateful for our modern day number system. Previously, we didn’t see any connections between Shakespeare, Newton and Galileo – but now their coexistence feels so… right! Coming out of the talk, we now feel educated in many ways numbers, literature, music and everything in between!”

Cultural Knowledge & Creativity in MFL!

June 5, 2024

In Years 7, 8 and 9, Language students were given the challenge of finding out about some cultural elements of their respective languages and where they are spoken. We feel it is so important that the students are aware that our main Modern Foreign Languages are not just spoken in France, Germany and Spain and that we help students develop an understanding and empathy for the wide variety of cultures represented in each of the countries chosen. After completing their research, students created a poster, without the use of IT. The results proved to be some beautiful presentations of a variety of towns and countries where the languages are spoken.

Our wonderful Foreign Language Assistants – Roberto, Hannah and Alexandre, chose their favourites and decided on overall winners. We are delighted to acknowledge the work of the overall winners and want to say a big thank you to all students who took part. Here are a couple of photos of some of the winners and posters.  Well done all!

Mayor’s Cadet Award for Milla

June 4, 2024

Newbury’s Mayor-Elect, Cllr Andy Moore, was delighted to award Milla the Mayor’s Cadet Award on Friday 17 May in school in the presence of Headteacher, Dr Fitter. Milla has been awarded the award for her outstanding contribution to the CCF at St Bart’s and her contribution to the Newbury community. She was nominated for the Young Persons’ Civic Award this year. Milla is highly active in her adventure training in the Newbury community. She has volunteered at the Waterside Centre for some time, where she has assisted in the accessible climbing sessions. She has volunteered at various community events, including the Newbury 10K.

Her duties will include supporting the Mayor in his attendance of various public events such as the Victoria Park Family Day, Michaelmas Fair, Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

Milla has recently successfully completed the 45 mile Ten Tors event on Dartmoor. This is yet another testament to her incredible teamwork, leadership and determination. She thoroughly deserves this Mayor’s Cadet Award.

Year 9 Boys’ Cricket vs Kennet

June 4, 2024

Well done to the Year 9 cricket team who won their first West Berkshire league fixture vs Kennet School. Kennet batted first and scored 68 off their 75 balls then St Bart’s batted and scored 109 runs of their 75 balls.

Players of the match were Pracket and Ram for their excellent bowling and Freddie for his batting. This was all three players’ first cricket match for St Bart’s! Well done to all involved.

Healthcare Routes for St Bart’s Students

June 3, 2024

Despite the sometimes gloomy headlines surrounding the state of our National Health Service, at St Bart’s we are often buoyed by the knowledge of the number of bright young people looking to forge a career as a healthcare professionals across a number of fields.

A recent Censuswide survey, commissioned by Universities UK and analysed by the Nuffield Trust, spoke to more than 5,000 young people across the UK, aged between 16 and 26. It found that, despite perceptions of high pressure and long hours, 73% are considering or have considered a career in healthcare, with nursing (39%), medicine (35%), and midwifery (22%) the most popular courses for these respondents. Improving the lives of others (46%) is the reason most often given for their interest in these careers, closely followed by having a rewarding career (40%).

Across the Sixth Form, over 250 students have been made offers through UCAS. We decided to speak to some of our Year 13 students (Izzy, Mabel and Issy), who have received offers for placements on healthcare courses. Both Izzy Quesada-Getgood and Mabel Rayner intend to go to University of East Anglia, Izzy has been offered a highly competitive place to study medicine and Mabel plans to study Paramedic Science. Issy Tallis plans to attend University of Bath and follow a course in Pharmacy.

“Initially, my interest to study medicine was sparked by the opportunity to spend the rest of my life learning about the human body. However, the process of applying to medical school has enlightened me to the amazing opportunities medicine has to offer, such as being able to have a positive impact on someone through the power of knowledge and compassion. Overall, I am very excited and grateful to have the opportunity to pursue such a fulfilling career. The application process for medicine is tough, but my experience was made so much easier with the help of the school who provided me with fantastic opportunities to develop my skills and reassurance during times of doubt and worry. I am so grateful for all the help I have received and look forward to what my future career brings!” –  Izzy Quesada-Getgood

“I have always wanted to work in the NHS and studying Paramedic Science seemed like the perfect option for me. I want to make a difference to peoples’ lives and the day-to-day variety of the job appeals to me. I’m particularly looking forwards to being part of an ambulance crew for my placements at university.”- Mabel Rayner

“I have always had an interest in medical related topics, which was driven by a personal experience of hospitals. I was lucky to be able to explore careers in this area through visiting Universities and attending science related career talks. Up until this point I was under the misconception that Pharmacists just handed out drugs but my eyes were opened to the wide breadth of areas Pharmacists covered, hospitals, community and research. Mrs Garrety and Mrs Lane were great in supporting my University applications and giving me excellent advice, hints and tips to get me ready for the University interviews. You need an expert understanding of the drugs and their effects but also skills in dealing with patients with complex needs.” – Issy Tallis

At St Bart’s we have a long record of supporting students into medicine through our Early Entrant Programme. However, if you are considering a career in the caring professions, remember there are so many exciting and important health routes other than the traditional medicine. This year, we have students choosing to pursue Paramedic Science, Pharmacy, Mental Health Nursing, Midwifery and Speech and Language Therapy.

Aerospace Residency for Madhukar

June 3, 2024

In March, BartholoNews encouraged students to consider applying for the STAAR (Summer Time Advanced Aerospace Residency) Programme 2024. This is a residential summer camp at which students will have the opportunity to experience flight simulators, drone flying, explore the world of engineering in aviation and engage with industry professionals. This will hopefully encourage them to study and take up careers in STEM-related fields.

We are delighted that Madhukar (9E3) will be one of only 40 Year 9 students in the whole of the UK taking part!

His application was supported by a reference from one of his science teachers, Ms Thomson, who says, “This is a wonderful opportunity for Madhukar. To be chosen from a very strong field of 180 students is fantastic. We hope he will have an amazing time on this STAAR and we are looking forward to hearing all about it after the summer holidays.”
