Alumnus Film Talk

January 30, 2025

Y12 Film Studies students were joined this week by Marc Jenner, a former student who, having completed a Film Production degree is working in the film industry. He gave a fascinating talk, reflecting on his own academic experiences and providing insights into careers and opportunities in film. The students are currently working on writing screenplays as a key component of their A Level NEA (Non-Examined Assessment. Working as he now does as a Script Reader, Marc was able to advise students on the ingredients of successful screenplays and he engaged on a one-to-one basis with many of the students who were keen to try out their ideas on someone with real industry experience.

Destinations Fair for Our Year 11

January 30, 2025

Last week, a group of our Year 11 students were given the opportunity to explore a destinations fair held in the Robinson Rooms. This was an opportunity for students to find out about alternative post-16 options to Sixth Form, to chat to a selection of local providers about the courses they have on offer and to receive advice on making choices and next steps. Our thanks to all the volunteers who gave their time to support this event, including Activate Learning (with information about Reading College, Bracknell and Wokingham College), Basingstoke College of Technology, Sparsholt College, University Centre Newbury and West Berkshire Training Consortium.

We are following the success of last week with two more upcoming careers events for our Year 12 students.

Online Careers Fair

On Tuesday 25 February we will be holding an online Careers Fair during which students will be able to choose from a selection of online webinars and join to learn more about a career that interests them. We would love to hear from professionals who would be interested to support this.

Are you available on Tuesday 25 February between 12.10-13.00pm?

Would you be comfortable delivering a 30 minute presentation to our students on how you got into your career, the work you do on a daily basis and how you followed this career path?

Do you work in one of the following sectors?

  • Business related fields such as marketing and HR
  • Education
  • Law
  • Emergency services
  • Crime and probation
  • Sport related professions

If you would like to learn more about supporting this event, please email Co-Head of Sixth Form, Mr Owen –  mowen@stbarts.co.uk

Post-18 Destinations Fair

On Wednesday 19 March we will hold our inaugural Post-18 Destinations Fair, which will be attended by local employers, colleges and universities, enabling students to explore different post A Level opportunities in our area. Our thanks to Activate Learning (Reading, Bracknell, Wokingham College), AWE, Gardner Leader, Kerridge Commercial Systems, Oxford Brookes University, Portsmouth University, Royal Holloway University, University Centre Newbury, University of Reading and University of Winchester who have all committed to supporting this event. If you work for an organisation which offers post-18 opportunities and might like to join us, or know of an organisation you wish us to approach, please do get in touch with dseward@stbarts.co.uk

Holocaust Memorial Day

January 30, 2025

Monday 27 January

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Auschwitz has become a global symbol of terror, genocide and the Shoah (known commonly as the Holocaust). Initially, Auschwitz was set up as a concentration camp for many people who were persecuted by the Nazis and their collaborators. In 1942, it also became the site of extermination, where over 1 million Jewish adults and children were murdered. In addition to Auschwitz, many other camps were set up across Europe to eradicate European Jewry.

On Holocaust Memorial Day, we remembered the many millions of lives that were lost during the Holocaust, whilst also remembering other victims of the Nazis and their collaborators. These included homosexuals, disabled people, Roma & Sinti, Soviet POW, non-Jewish Poles and political opponents. January 27 also marks remembrance for those who were persecuted during other genocides in the 20th century including Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

As there now exists only a handful of Holocaust survivors in the world, we must ensure that the memory of those who were persecuted lives on. At St Bart’s, we are committed to preserving this memory and have worked alongside UCL’s Holocaust Education Centre to develop our teaching resources. In April 2024, 40 of our current Year 13 students visited Krakow, Poland, to learn more about pre-war Jewish life, the Holocaust and life after the Holocaust. They walked through the old ghetto where Jews were concentrated under Nazi control, heard from a Holocaust survivor and visited Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Over this week and next week, Mr Owen, Miss May and our Beacon Captains, Abigail Marshall (9P3), Daniel Elliott (9P3), Dylan Griffiths (9C2) and Eleri Richlings (9P1) will speak with students during their assemblies on the importance of remembering the Holocaust. We are also excited to welcome ‘Voices’, a Holocaust education charity on 10 February, who will perform their play ‘Kindness: A legacy of the Holocaust’ to our Year 9 cohort. They will also perform a second showing for any of our students, their parents and carers on 10 February at 4.30pm. For further information please visit The Beacon School Programme page on our website or if you have further questions please email mowen@stbarts.co.uk

2025 Young Science Writer Award

Organised by the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW), this prestigious national competition offers students the opportunity to showcase their science writing talent and gain recognition for their work.

The aim of the competition is to encourage talented students aged 14-16 with a passion for STEM and writing, to submit an 800-word essay on the topic of their choice. We work with schools across the UK to help their students submit an essay to our award.

The competition is highly publicised and the 2024 winner was recently featured by the BBC. The BBC, The Royal Institution and Science Museum are our key strategic partners, supporting us and the winner of the competition.

The winner will receive £1,000, a 1-year Young Royal Institution membership, and the chance to meet BBC science journalists among other prizes. Their essay is also published nationally in the media, which attracts highly positive press coverage for the school. The runners-up each get £250 with ten students who are highly commended receiving £100 each.

Key Dates:

Cleancut Drinkware – A Young Enterprise

January 27, 2025

The Young Enterprise Programme empowers young people to set up and run a student company. Students make all the decisions about their business, from deciding on the company name, managing the company finances to selling to the public. Participants gain practical business experience and key skills. Mrs Seward, Head of Business and Economics, oversees St Bart’s students participating in the programme and says:

“Young Enterprise is a fantastic opportunity for students to experience the reality of running their own business. They learn skills of communication, team work and time management. They develop the ability to problem solve and resolve conflict, for example when materials do not arrive on time or when a member of the company fails to complete the tasks they promised to do! As a school, we have had great success over the years, winning awards for best business plan, best trade stand, most innovative product, management and leadership. Last year’s company, ‘Flame Fortune’, were runners up at the area final and, with the winners, represented Berkshire at the regional final”.

This year, our latest student entrepreneurs are looking for your custom and support. Clean Cut produce drinkware, using a bottle cutter to score the glass, followed by hot and then cold water to separate the glass. They source their glass bottles from Littlecote House Hotel in West Berkshire, following a process that is fully sustainably and returns an ‘up-cycled’ glass bottle to the customer.

Clean Cut Company Member, Charlie Gale (Year 12), says:

“Since September 2024, we have been involved in the Young Enterprise Programme. After joining as a member, you brainstorm and come up with an idea for your company and make it into a reality, taking on various roles that cover all functional areas of a business, including HR, finance, administration, IT, sales, marketing and operations. We are now able to start taking sales from customers, after a busy production period from November to the start of January. We have a range of drinkware that you can request, each for £4, by emailing cleancut.newbury@gmail.com. Look out for more updates from us as we participate in more events!”

The Clean Cut marketing team have been busy setting up an Instagram page, which you can view here.

Congratulations to the Clean Cut team for all the work they have put in to making their company a reality. We hope you can support them. Remember, glasses are £4 each and can be ordered by emailing cleancut.newbury@gmail.com

U14 Football

January 27, 2025

The U14 Girls’ Football team are through to the second round of the County Cup. We travelled to Newland Girls’ School in Maidenhead last week.

We won, 1-0. Liv Lewis scored after just 5 minutes. We dominated the game with possession and deserved the win. Liv was awarded player of the match by the opposition. Well done to all who played.

Vodafone and St Bart’s Apprenticeship Day

St Bart’s were delighted to return to Vodafone last week for an apprenticeship support masterclass at the striking Vodafone Headquarters Conference Pavilion. This is the third year in which the school has been fortunate to partner with Vodafone for this event. 60 Sixth Form students from the St Bart’s Apprenticeship Applicant Group benefitted from a ‘mock’ version of an apprenticeship assessment day. Vodafone managers, employees, graduates and apprentices gave their time to take students through information on Vodafone’s apprenticeships and the abilities that employers are looking for in applicants. Our students were also given personalised feedback on interview technique and participated in a series of Group Tasks specifically designed to put their teamwork, problem solving and presentation skills to the test.

Mr Wilder, Co-Head of Sixth Form, said: “We are hugely grateful to Vodafone for providing this invaluable opportunity and sharing their advice with our students. This important partnership really does make a huge difference in preparing students to make strong applications to major companies. We are seeing an increasing interest in students wishing to pursue the apprenticeship route, which is often highly competitive, and it is fantastic when local employers can offer their time in this way to support our young people. One of our alumni, Owen Chetwood, took part in the first Vodafone apprenticeship masterclass and credits this experience with motivating him to apply for a Vodafone Level 6 degree apprenticeship in Technical Project Management – he is now working at Vodafone Headquarters! One of our Year 13 students, Seb Chapman, who attended last year, has just received a Level 7 degree apprenticeship from KPMG. It is really inspiring to see the success that comes from the hard work of the students, backed by the support of our community; I can’t wait to see how our Year 12 use the knowledge they gained last week”.

Year 12 student, George Britton, said: “Going to Vodafone HQ was a brilliant experience. I received really useful feedback on my interview technique and really enjoyed the experience. Talking with the apprentices at Vodafone has inspired me to consider an apprenticeship route.”

University of Bath Visit

Our thanks also to Mr Cimmino from the University of Bath, who last week presented to our Year 12 parents/carers and students. The talk focussed on applying to competitive universities and on student funding. Students, parents and guardians were guided through the application process and were provided with top tips when applying for competitive universities. Mr Cimmino also provided students with advice and recommendations on the new layout of the personal statement, which our current Year 12s will need to complete. Mr Owen and Mr Wilder, Co-Heads of Sixth Form, also provided an overview of the UCAS process and how our Year 12 will be supported through their applications.

Charlie Gale, Year 12, said: “The talk began with an overview of UCAS personal statements, providing an insight into their format and the importance of having a strong personal statement. The most useful part of the talk was on personal finance options, including tuition fees and maintenance loans. This helped dispel many common myths I had about student finance, making it much clearer and less daunting. Finally, other options were mentioned, such as an apprenticeship or gap year, leaving me more prepared about my next steps.”

Part of the Sixth Form Enrichment Programme, this talk was the latest in a series of visits by universities. This academic year, St Bart’s have also hosted the University of Reading and the University of Portsmouth, and there are plans to host more.  Mr Owen said: “A student’s chosen university and course can in many ways set the direction of their path in life. It is an extremely exciting time for both students and their families, however, we recognise that these choices can also be overwhelming at times. We want to arm our students, not only with the grades to achieve their ambitions, but also the knowledge and skills to make the right choices and to have confidence in their choice and their next steps on their academic journey”.

Work Experience Week

We have launched our Work Experience programme where Year 12 students can take part in up to five days of work experience throughout the academic year. Students are approaching local employers and using Unifrog and UCAS to secure in person and online work shadowing experiences.
