Duke of Edinburgh Awards 2025

March 6, 2025

Congratulations to 42 Bronze, 7 Silver and 3 Gold Duke of Edinburgh award winners. Students have been busy participating in a variety of activities including volunteering in their local community, gaining new skills in a variety of fields from languages to science, and participating in sporting activities. The DofE participants also completed a self-sufficient expedition, which involved them carrying all their food, tents, stoves and personal equipment for the two or three-day expedition and navigating themselves to check points and their campsite. They should all be very proud of their accomplishments.

If a student was not in school on the DofE presentation day, they can now collect their Bronze or Silver certificate and badge from Reception.  The Gold DofE students have the honour of collecting their certificate and badge at a presentation in Buckingham Palace.

Congratulations to all the students who have completed their awards…

Bart’s Singers on Stage

March 3, 2025

On Friday 14 February, 30 singers from VoxFresh had the incredible opportunity to perform at the New Theatre in Oxford alongside Britain’s Got Talent winner, Sydnie Christmas, as part of her national My Way tour.

Among those selected to take the stage were St Bart’s students Josh and Arwen (Y8), Floss, Imogen, Charlie and Maddie (Y9), Lucy and Will (Y13)

“The young singers delivered a stunning performance, sharing the stage with a professional artist and showcasing their hard work, dedication and passion for music,” said VoxFresh franchisor and director, Kat Penn.

The experience was not only a fantastic opportunity to perform but also offered valuable insight into the behind-the-scenes workings of the music industry and the effort required to bring such a production to life.

Maths Challenges Report

February 27, 2025

TEAM MATHS CHALLENGE

On Thursday 13 February, a team of four excellent mathematicians from Year 8 and 9 travelled to Queen Anne’s School in Caversham to take part in the regional round of the UK Mathematics Trust’s Team Maths Challenge. The competition was fierce with 19 local schools competing to get through to the national final. Sam, Josef, Nila, and Tom took part in four gruelling rounds of difficult Mathematics and teamwork.

First up was the Group Round, with ten questions to answer as a team of 4. This was quickly followed by the Crossnumber, where the team was split into pairs with one pair having the across clues and one pair having the down clues and only allowed to communicate through their adjudicating teacher. At this point we were listed as one of the six schools at the top within only a few marks of each other!

After lunch we had the trickiest round – the Shuttle. They again had to work in pairs, with each answer required to answer the next question, and under a time limit with a bonus for finishing quickly. The day finished with the Relay which was definitely the most fun round. The pairs were spread around the room, then pair A had to answer a question and run it to their teacher to check the answer before running the next question to pair B for them to answer and so on. I’m sure you can imagine the ensuing chaos with people running all over the place! There was a fantastic atmosphere of excitement and collaboration in the room.

It was then a nail-biting wait for the results to be calculated. We came in 4th place, which is an excellent achievement against such strong competition across 19 schools. A big congratulations to Sam, Josef, Nila, and Tom who greatly enjoy their day of maths!

INTERMEDIATE MATHS CHALLENGE

On Wednesday 29 January, 155 of our best mathematicians from Year 9, 10 and 11 took part in the Intermediate Maths Challenge competition run by the UK Mathematics Trust. They faced a tricky paper of 25 multiple choice questions, stretching their minds across a wide variety of Mmathematical topics. Look to the end of this article to find some example questions from the paper (question 7 was very popular!). The following students achieved certificate awards for their excellent efforts:

Y10 Business Christmas Market

January 16, 2025

Over the Autumn Term, Year 10 Business Studies students learnt about business plans as part of their GCSE course. Students were challenged to generate a business idea where profits were high and costs low – with all profits going to House charities!  The students created a business plan outlining the various aspects of their business, from the idea to the financial viability of their business.

On Thursday 19 December, the students were part of a very festive Christmas market in the hub, where they were able to bring their business ideas to life. The students did an amazing job and there was a total of 12 stalls in the hub! The stalls ranged from a festive tombola to hot chocolate and lots of treats and goodies in between! They raised an amazing £273.74, which will be split amongst the House charities. A massive congratulations to ALL students that took part; the effort, teamwork and dedication to this task was amazing! The students who raised the most money were Hala Alharbat, Divyanshi Malik, Aanya Dwivedi and Miraya Srivastava who have won themselves Amazon vouchers – Well done!

‘I think the Market Day was really fun to do and it was a great experience to sell to students for charity. We worked really hard for it and we spent weeks planning. The students were really nice and thank you to everyone who bought from us on the Market Day.’ – Hala Alharbat

‘The Christmas market sale provided an invaluable opportunity for us as Business students to apply our knowledge in a real-world setting. My team and I invested considerable time and effort in our project, and we were all pleased and humbled by our success. At the outset, we did not expect to win or generate a profit, particularly given the calibre of the other business ideas showcased. We are deeply appreciative of the support we received and extend our sincere thanks to everyone who made a purchase from us’ – Aanya Dwivedi

‘For me the market day was an enriching experience, where students were given a real-life experience, and I learned useful entrepreneurial skills. I was thrilled to see the enthusiasm in the students coming together to help and raise money for the charity. I would like to thank all of my friends, teachers and the school community for giving us this opportunity and I am proud to have contributed to such a meaningful cause’ – Divyanshi Malik

MFL Karaoke

December 19, 2024

Last week students competed in the annual MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) Department Karaoke Competition. Modern Foreign Languages at St Bart’s is not just about learning new languages but also about students developing Cultural Capital, broadening their knowledge of different countries and understanding more about other cultures, lifestyles and people. Students were challenged to submit a group or solo karaoke performance in a foreign language. Group Finalists were then invited to perform in the school hall to an audience. As always, it was a fun and joyous occasion, judged this year by Ms Maunders from the Music department.

Firstly Summer Wrzesinski was awarded her trophy as winner of the solo competition. Her winning recording was of her singing the traditional Christmas carol “Stille Nacht” in German.

Then the five groups that had made it through to the final performed as follows:

10C German singing was ist dein Lieblingsfach?

8S Gm singing Augen auf!

7C2 singing on écrit sur les murs

7P2 singing  Körperteil Blues

Y12 Meghan and Dilan singing Barbaras Rhababerbar

As Ms Maunders pointed out in her judgement remarks, the standard of the competition was very high and has moved on considerably from its early days. This year’s competition was closely fought but in the end the trophy was awarded to 7C2 for their very impressive rendition of “on écrit sur les murs“. The class were coached by Mrs Blakely and helped with choreography by Mrs Clare.

The five songs performed were all very different and much effort had gone into learning the words and thinking through the performances. Congratulations to 7C2 and thank you to all who entered the competition.

Sovereign Award for Kat

December 16, 2024

We’re delighted to share this photo of alumnus, Kat Wright, receiving an international St John’s Ambulance Award in recognition of her achievements with the organisation. The Sovereign is the top award from St John’s. Kat’s certificate was signed by King Charles before it was presented to her by the Princess Royal at a ceremony in London last month. Only nine other cadets in the UK have received the award this year.

Kat won the National Finals of the St John’s Ambulance National Youth Public Speaking Competition in 2023, speaking about neurodiversity awareness. She joined St John’s following an assembly from them in Year 7. Despite being “quite shy” she took on leadership roles, gaining confidence and putting in 6,000 hours of volunteering! Kat is set to study International Social and Public Policy with Politics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) from 2025. Well done Kat on this remarkable achievement.
