Ukrainian Anniversary Ceremony

February 29, 2024

On Friday, St Bart’s marked the 2-year anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine with a wreath laying ceremony in the school’s Heritage Garden and stood in solidarity with our Ukrainian students on this difficult day.

Dr Fitter thanked our students for their huge contribution to our school community and local MP and government minister, Laura Farris, delivered a message of support and laid flowers on behalf of the people of Newbury. Head students, Bella Warner and Armand Graham, spoke of the immense sense of awe they felt for the resilience of their Ukrainian peers and laid flowers on behalf of the school community.

Year 13 students, Pavlo, Danil and Maksym (Year 12) delivered a powerful poem in Ukrainian and English, whilst Masha (Year 13) kindly thanked St Bart’s staff and students for the way they’ve been welcomed. Masha and Karyna (Year 11) then laid a wreath in memory of those who have lost their lives to the war and those who have bravely fought to defend Ukraine.

Dr Fitter said; “It is important to our school community to mark this anniversary and our continued support of Ukraine and, in particular, our Ukrainian students. These students joined St Bart’s under extremely difficult circumstances for themselves and their families and yet they have still brought so much to St Bart’s, their peers and their studies. They all deserve a bright future”.

Open Studios Showcase

February 27, 2024

St Bart’s students are once again featured in an online exhibition of their work on the Open Studios website. Open Studios West Berkshire and North Hampshire runs in association with the Newbury Spring Festival, encouraging and promoting accessibility to art and artists.

Ceramics, digital art, drawing and painting, graphic art, mixed media, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textiles pieces are showcased, celebrating the work of our fantastic GCSE and A Level students. The images on the website will be changed regularly in order to feature more of our students’ work. As in previous years, at the end of the Summer Term, we will have our online exhibition, showcasing students’ final exam outcomes.

Evers & Davis House Evening 2024

February 22, 2024

Before half term, Evers and Davis Houses regaled us with a plethora of fabulous performances in their annual House Evening.

From Elodie and Lenka who began the evening dancing to ‘Rolling in the Deep’, to Andrea Wong stunning everyone with her Chopin rendition on the piano and the Year 9 students’ alternative “Romeo and Juliet” sketch, it was clear that there is a lot of talent in Evers and Davis.

One of the highlights of the evening for many was the 7D1 Lip Sync Battle in which we saw students competing against teachers and staff. The Evers and Davis team were joined by Assistant Head Teacher, Miss Thorne, amusing us with their Spice Girls performance, complete with costumes.

Several other tutor groups also performed en masse, including 7E1 with their ‘Dragons’ Den’ sketch, 8D3’s rap and 7E2&3 joined together to present ‘Call me Maybe”.

Amongst the many musical acts we heard from a jazz group who brilliantly performed the standard ‘Take Five”, Callum and Eleanor with a soulful ‘Just the two of us’ and group ‘White Noise’ rounded of the evening with an energetic Blur medley that many of the students joined them on the floor to bounce along to.

Well done to the Evers and Davis teams for putting on such a great evening. Thanks also to Mr Weller and supporting students for their sound, lighting and backstage expertise. Finally, thank you to all who attended and helped raise more than £700 for the House Charities, West Berkshire Mencap and Swings & Smiles.

Post-16 Destinations Fair

February 6, 2024

On Thursday 25 January, Year 10 and 11 students and parents had the opportunity to attend a destinations fair held in the school hall.

A number of post-16 providers were on hand to discuss the courses they offer, as well as organisations that can support students in making choices. It was an opportunity for students to find out about alternative options post-16 and to investigate the option of following an apprenticeship route. Students were able to make applications and found the event very useful.

Thank you to the organisations who supported the event.

Holocaust Documentary Maker in School

February 1, 2024

Documentary maker and reporter, Mirek Gosney, joined us at St Bart’s last week as part of our Beacon School programme of activities around Holocaust Memorial Day.

Speaking to our Year 12s during their enrichment session, Mirek described his recent documentary, ‘Building Hitler’s Empire’, which delves into the true story of the Nazis’ forgotten forced and slave labour programme. The documentary considers the perspective of Mirek’s own Czech great-grandfather, Miroslav Jeřábek, who was conscripted and sent to work in Germany. Mirek spoke to our students about economic exploitation, often involving global corporations, and about the difference between slave labour and forced labour, which offered some pay and freedom. He also explored the theme of forgotten voices, justice and recognition and whether you can ever truly compensate for some experiences.

Mirek also shared his experience of the making of documentaries and his reflections on his research and decision to remain a neutral voice. Following the talk, Mirek answered questions from our students and spent time sharing advice with those interested in journalism and film and documentary making.

Our thanks to Mirek for giving his time and sharing his story.

House Film 2

January 29, 2024

Lights, camera, action – it’s time for House Film 2!

On Thursday 1 February at 6.30pm in the Hall, the Film & Media Department will once again be rolling out the red carpet for students, parents and teachers, as we gather for a very special evening of film premieres and popcorn!

Since September, over 90 St Bart’s students across all year groups have immersed themselves in the world of film to create eight exciting shorts for our viewing. House teams have been challenged to  produce a Junior and Senior entry, with Year 10 supporting students from Years 7-9 (Junior category) and Year 13 leading a team of Year 12s and 11s (Senior category).

This has involved students turning their hand to script-writing, acting, camerawork, lighting, sound, set, costume, hair and make-up. BartholoNews spoke to just some of the students involved”¦

Jenny and Laura (Year 12: Patterson Senior); “Our entry is ‘Night Owl’ – A masked killer follows their victim to a suburban home but what will happen when their paths cross?!. So much work and time has gone into our entry. We’ve been directing and focused on post production and it has required a high amount of planning and organising. It’s worth it though, as it is such a creative opportunity to be able to be in complete control of your project. We just know it will be the most rewarding experience to watch our film on the big screen. We want to thank Mr Evans for all his technical support, Mr Roberts for organising everything and Mr Keetch for moral support!”

Elizabeth and Ellie (Year 10: Curnock Junior); “Our entry is ‘The Heist’ – Four House heroes come together to steal what is rightfully theirs – get ready for a heist to remember. We got involved in the first ever House Film as actors last year and we just loved it! Now we are back and directing. Our film is very ambitious and we have a big team, which brings its own challenges. We really enjoyed the casting and the school have been so brilliant with all our requests – they even let us blackout a whole block after school and film on the roof! House Film is a lot of work but if we win it will be so worth it!”

The films will be judged by two St Bart’s Alumni: Reece Broughton, Studio Production Manager at Pinewood Group Limited and Holly Choules, a multi-skilled operator working with Zest4.tv, the production company. The stakes are high, as the winners and runners-up will be rewarded with their own film screened at Newbury Vue on 27 February, whilst the winning Y13 and Y10 House Film Captains will also get 3-month free subscription to MUBI, an art-house film streaming platform.

Last year, Davis were crowned the first ever St Bart’s House Film champions. Will they do the double? Or will the crown pass to Curnock, Evers or Patterson? We can’t wait for this particular twist in the plot!

Don’t forget to book your tickets – just £1.50 and now available on Parent Pay.

MFL Christmas Karaoke

January 18, 2024

Before Christmas, the MFL Department held its annual, highly competitive karaoke competition. MFL teachers start preparations for this soon after the half term break and it is taken very seriously indeed. After an initial first round of 12 entries, the French, German and Spanish Assistants made their selection and the final was held with six classes battling it out live on the stage in the hall. This is what the students had to say about the event:

“For the karaoke, we practised in class a brilliant Spanish song. We enjoyed spending 10-15 minutes in lessons building up to the competition, singing our hearts out! It was nerve-wracking doing the performance, but it was a great performance with a well executed dance! We learnt the lyrics and a little dance. It was a really fun experience.”

Students from 9KSpP

After a close score, the winning class was Miss Wright’s Y8 German group singing ‘Schnippi Schnappi’ with masks, a dance, solos and chorus, it was very slick and extremely well performed.

A huge thank you to Mrs Wood for organising the whole event and to Mr Edens and Mrs Wilcox for being our esteemed judges.

Vodafone Apprentice Experience

January 18, 2024

As part of the St Bart’s Apprenticeship Programme, once again we proudly partnered with Vodafone to deliver an apprenticeship support masterclass for 45 St Bart’s Sixth Form students at the prestigious Vodafone Headquarters Conference Pavilion. Vodafone managers, employees, graduates and apprentices took students through a ‘mock’ version of an apprenticeship assessment day to prepare students for making strong applications to major companies. Students discovered more about Vodafone’s apprenticeships, learnt about what employers are looking for in applicants, gained personalised feedback on interview technique and participated in a series of Group Tasks specifically designed to put their teamwork, problem solving and presentation skills to the test.

Jake Randall, Vodafone Data & Insights Specialist Apprentice, said: “It was a great experience to once again facilitate a mock assessment day for St Bart’s School with Vodafone, and to see how much we helped some of the visiting students in their preparation for life after further education. As a second-year data analyst apprentice I was very much bucking the trend by pursuing an apprenticeship over the conventional university route. I am on a great scheme here at Vodafone and I have realised all the benefits it can offer. I was really keen to share my experience with other young people and give them the best opportunity to jump on the apprenticeship bandwagon. We’ve built a great mutual relationship with St Bart’s School, with young people’s futures placed firmly at the centre. We look forward to continuing to work with St Bart’s.”

Owen Chetwood, Year 13 St Bart’s student, said: “Visiting Vodafone HQ and learning from brilliant members of the Vodafone team was such a valuable experience and has really motivated me to apply for a Level 6 degree apprenticeship at a top company. The interviews and in-person group assessment activities made clear exactly what an employer is looking for in an apprentice, and hearing the stories from the apprentices themselves was inspiring. I would highly recommend this day to sixth form students next year.”

Mr Wilder, Deputy Head of Sixth Form, said: “We are hugely grateful to Vodafone for sharing their outstanding venue and their knowledge and advice. We are lucky to be the only school in the area to have this close relationship with Vodafone and utilise the invaluable opportunities they provide for our students in their ambitions to secure these competitive placements at major companies across the UK. Our students were outstanding and gained so much from the experience. Last year, we had students who secured Level 6 degree apprenticeships at top companies such as AWE, FMB Engineering and M&S, and we will continue to support students in the apprenticeship programme this year. We have had so much interest from students for this type of initiative and I can announce that we will be repeating this apprenticeship support masterclass day in January 2025 to allow as many sixth form students as possible to participate. It is fantastic when local employers can offer their time in this way to support our young people. We’d love to hear from any other companies who feel they could work with our Apprenticeship programme in any way.”

Year 10 Hands-On Sky Studios Experience

January 8, 2024

On Tuesday 30 November, Year 10 Film Studies students (and two Year 12s) journeyed to the West London home of Sky TV.

Students were able to see the sheer scale of the Sky ‘campus’, where over 7,000 people work, and saw both the Sky News and Sky Sports News studios. The highlight of the afternoon though was working in groups, supported by Sky employees, to come up with an idea for a film trailer, shooting it on high-end cameras utilising green screen technology and then editing it all together. The highly amusing finished products were then screened for all the groups to appreciate.

Lucas (10C1) said, “I really enjoyed the studio space where we made our film trailers and my favourite part was working under pressure, trying to figure things out as a group. I learned how the news is broadcast and how if they go over their timeslot they get fined £100,000, so being precise is really important!”
