Year 7 Cricket

June 17, 2024

Well done to the Year 7 boys’ cricket team for their strong performance in the County Cup quarter final v Reading Boys School. St Bart’s batted first, scoring 97 runs for 3 wickets. Reading replied with 98 for 3.

Freddie and Zach had a strong opening batting partnership, scoring a good number of runs between them. Runs were also scored by Joe and Tom. Wickets were taken during the overs bowled by Joe, Tom and Freddie. Players of the match were Freddie for his batting, scoring 28 runs, and Evan for his brave fielding.

Well Done to our Berkshire Hockey Players

June 13, 2024

The squad representing Berkshire was selected from players who undertook the Autumn Development Centre programme in Reading, with players travelling from across the whole county to take part. Kirstin, Alexi and Charlotte from St Bart’s were some of the selected U17 girls who then took part in the Berkshire Academy Centre programme and played matches against the counties in the Southeast of England region. These included Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey, Sussex, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and London North and South.

The three girls represented the County across the whole season; St Bart’s had the largest number of squad players from any single school in the county.  Two of the three squad awards also went to the girls.

As mentioned in last week’s BartholoNews, Charlotte received the Coaches Commendation Award for the squad, and Alexia received the end of season award from the county for the most improved player in the squad for the 23/24 season. Well done girls!

D-Day Anniversary

June 13, 2024

Twelve cadets from St Bartholomew’s School CCF visited Greenham Common Control Tower to join the Newbury community in commemorating the 80th D-Day Anniversary.

We were invited to be a part of the day by the Greenham Control Tower Trust. We completed a few small jobs for the trust during the event.

We were delighted to meet many people, including veterans, who had many stories to tell. The tower’s exhibition on the history of Greenham Common as an airbase was very interesting.

Some of us also really enjoyed the tower’s café and the fish and chips on sale. Our cadets paraded with the serving British soldiers from Dennison Barracks and the US Air Force service personnel during the service.

Our cadets did an excellent job of representing the cadet movement at this event and were a great credit to the school.

“Insightful” Paultons Park Trip

June 12, 2024

On 23 May, Year 10 Students went on a Business Studies trip to Paultons Park. The students attended a workshop on Paultons Park’s business plan. This was an interesting and relevant workshop; the speaker spoke about marketing techniques that are used and explained why Paultons Park used different strategies in comparison to their competitors.

The speaker spoke about various business aspects, which had the students engaged and intrigued. The talk was an excellent source of relevant and realistic examples of the topics that the students have covered in class or will be covering in future in their GCSEs. The students were also given the opportunity to enjoy the rides, which were enjoyed by all! This is what the students had to say:

“It was very good, especially the workshop. It was very insightful and also having fun on the rides was always a plus’”

Alrayaan Hussain (10D3)

“Overall, I think the trip was beneficial to us and will help with upcoming exams and next year’s topics. The workshop was interactive and interesting.”

Mia Martin-Flaven (10P2)

“The workshop was very informative and really put into perspective the content we have been learning when applied to a real business. It helped me grasp the concepts of Business Studies GCSE better and it was also nice to have time to go on rides on this trip. Would definitely recommend to potential Business Studies and Enterprise students.”

Sixth Form Sports Update

June 12, 2024

The Sixth Form House Sport/Championship has continues to run each week with different events every Wednesday. Just in this term we’ve had House Badminton, House Dodgeball, Lacrosse and a quiz. House Badminton saw some excellent numbers, with each House being represented really well.

Patterson added House Badminton to their list of wins, ending Curnock’s never-ending winning run! House Dodgeball was up next with fewer participants due to our Year 13s being on study leave, which left Charlie from Evers on his own, so in stepped Evers House Leader – Mr Owen to make a formidable duo with Charlie who somehow managed to come 2nd (more out of pity than anything else!).

Curnock picked up another House Dodgeball win, which means they have won every House Dodgeball this year. House Lacrosse was next on the calendar but with only 11 students out, we decided to enjoy the sunshine and play for fun. It was fantastic to see the boys getting involved and being taught the rules by Sophie and Annie!

Finally, we were due to have House Rounders to end the half-term but of course, the British weather decided to do its thing and rain when it wasn’t wanted. This meant we had to rearrange and do a fun quiz instead. Huge thanks to Mr Sullivan for coming up with a great quiz at the last minute. The quiz ended in a tiebreak, with the question being “how old is Mr Sullivan?” Ellie and Sophie guessed the answer correctly and therefore won the quiz. A great Wednesday afternoon for all! Fingers crossed the weather turns and we get sunshine from now on with House Cricket, House Rounders and a Sports Day all to look forward to.

Phoebe Jumps to Finals!

June 10, 2024

Sunday 19 May, Phoebe (12P3) took ex-racehorse ‘AmazingRed’ to Enborne Equestrian Centre for his 4th competition. Here’s how she got on…

“AmazingRed was entered in an 80cm warm up round and his first 90cm competitive round. He came 4th in the 80 and 5th in the 90, earning us a qualifying ticket for Trailblazers National finals held in Warwickshire.

This is a huge achievement for this horse as he has only been jumping for 5 months, having only come out of race training in April 2023, with his first competition only occurring in February of this year.”

Well done Phoebe, we look forward to hearing how you get on.

June 10, 2024

Our Year 10 girls finally got to play their Cricket fixtures this week, after weeks of disruption! In an excellent evening of cricket, both our A and B teams won all three of their games, making it six wins out of a possible six. Our A team beat Park House 57-34, Trinity 77-67 and Kennet 72-49. Our B team beat Kennet 55-20, St Gabriel’s 77-67 and Park House 71-60. Well done to all girls involved, a great term of Cricket – apart from the weather. Special mention to player of the day, Flo! Bring on the Rounders season.
