European Youth Parliament Final

In July a delegation of St Bart’s students attended the national final of the European Youth Parliament in Newcastle. The delegation was made up of Isobel Henstridge, Annabelle Prowse, Ben Symes, Sam Kirby, William Sperrey, Miles Ley, Ben Douthwaite and Alex McDermott. Over the course of three days, our students took part in committee work to craft a series of resolutions that were then debated in a general assembly. The theme of the session was “Innovate” and aimed to empower individuals for a brighter future. The resolutions debated included topics ranging from defence spending, climate change and public health, through to gender equality and civil liberties. The students also had the opportunity to take part in a variety of engaging team building activities with students from other UK schools run by EYP representatives from across Europe.

“People should definitely try to do EYP as it is a really fun and exciting experience. You are encouraged to work with people from all over the country, it’s really interesting how we dived deep into specific motions.”

“I took part in debates which related to real life matters. Committee teamwork helped me get closer to my team and make friends I will never forget. The memories are something that will remain with me. The like-minded people I met were so kind and I made friends with people I wouldn’t have spoken to before. It built my confidence and resilience, as well as my debating skills at a national level.”
