Evers House Update

December 20, 2023

As we come to the end of a busy Autumn Term, everyone in the Evers community is looking forward to a well-earned rest.  All Evers students have worked tremendously hard in and out of the classroom.  We have had lots of successful sports fixtures, Year 7 Activity Days, House Music, Staff Dodgeball, Children in Need fundraising and lots and lots of bake sales!

The Evers Office continues to thrive this year with Mr Edens, Mr Turner and Mrs Willcox.  We are thankful for the positive atmosphere provided when Evers students pop in to see us.  We are particularly pleased to see so many of our Evers students being rewarded for 100% attendance this term!

The Evers House Captains – Megan, Alex, Grace, Aadi and Morgan – have been SUPERB in leading our students in lots of different activities and initiatives this term.  Megan continues to find ways of leading students in raising money for our House Charity, West Berks Mencap. So far this year, we have raised £780! Most recently the tutees of 9E2 held a cake sale raising nearly £60. Well done Oli, Rose, Isabella, Isambard, Aiden, Emily, Rayan, and Luke.

And Megan has raised nearly £200 with her raffle for this delicious-looking chocolate hamper!

Thank you all for your superb efforts in continuing to raise money for West Berks MENCAP J

Grace led our Evers House Music contributions, which was brilliant.  It was so good to see so many Evers students involved in this – something we look forward to every year.  Morgan and Alex have been pivotal in developing sports teams for our House competitions, while Aadi helped to take the lead in organising entertainment with other House Captains for the annual Year 7 Christmas Party.

We wish everyone in Evers a happy end of term and hope that you all have a great holiday!  We look forward to a bright shiny New Year in 2024!

Christmas Creative Writing and Book Grotto

December 20, 2023

Congratulations to the winners and runners-up of our whole-school Christmas Writing Competition who received Amazon vouchers for their creative efforts. Well done to Harriet (7E2), Liv (7P1) Gauravi (9C1), Abigail (8P3), Tabitha (10P2), Bella (12D1) and Paige (8C2) not pictured. The task was to write an alternative story or poem that continues the famous lines “Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house” and the entries were judged by a panel of sixth-form literature enthusiasts.

Readings from some of the writers’ work preceded the exchanging of presents in our first Jolabokaflod, inspired by the Icelandic tradition of book-giving on Christmas Eve, in which some 60 students took part. Huge thanks to Mrs Hewetson and Mrs Kirby in the Library for co-ordinating everything and establishing our Christmas book grotto!

It’s been a great term for avid readers at St Bart’s and our Patron of Reading, Peter J Murray, has written us a letter with a little puzzle to think about! Read it on here.

Key Stage Five Awards

December 20, 2023

The annual KS5 Awards Evening was held on Monday 18 December. The awards evening was opened by our Headteacher, Dr Fitter. We were lucky enough to have Dr Robert Conway, Emergency Medicine Physician, as our guest speaker, who attended St Bart’s from 2006-2013. Dr Conway gave an informative, insightful and inspirational speech reflecting on his time at St. Barts and his career so far.

During the evening, over 80 prizes were awarded to last year’s Year 13 students to celebrate their fantastic achievements. Subject Prizes were given, as well as 19 Major Awards for contributions to many aspects of school life outside the classroom. We celebrated the success of 27 students who received Special Prizes for academic achievement at A Level. It was wonderful to welcome back prize winners, nominees and their parents to celebrate an outstanding group of students.

Oliver!

December 19, 2023

Last week saw the return of our much loved whole school production. The Drama Department chose to perform Oliver! The Musical and entertain audiences with this much loved tale. This truly was a whole school production in every sense of the word. Not only did students from every year take to the stage but they were accompanied by our wonderful School Band, directed Mrs Robertson and conducted by student, Edward Tyler. The production was supported by student stage hands and by a student tech team. Costumes and handkerchiefs were ably made by our textiles students and the art department supported on securing and creating the back drops and props that set this Dickensian Scene. The school would also like to thank to Camp Hobson Funeral Directors, Didcot Girls School and National Animal Welfare Trust for their additional support with props and costumes.

In order to offer as much opportunity to our students as possible, the drama department chose to run and rehearse with two casts. The ‘Twist Cast’ took centre stage for the Friday Matinee, especially performed for Year 6s from John Rankin Junior School, Falkland Primary and St Nicolas Junior School, as well as the Monday evening performance, whilst the ‘Oliver Cast’ took centre stage for the Tuesday and Wednesday evening performances. The school hall was sold out for all performances and feedback form the audiences was wonderful.

Mrs Parkington, Drama Teacher and Director, said: “I feel hugely proud of all the students who have thrown so much energy and enthusiasm into this production. It has been a real joy to direct them.â€

Congratulations to all the students involved. Thank you also to Mrs Parkington (Director), Mrs Howe (Producer) and Mrs Hoult (Choreographer) for their commitment to offering our students this wonderful opportunity and for supporting them in delivering a fantastic show.

Year 9, 10 & Sixth Form Rugby Update

December 19, 2023

Year 9 Rugby

The Year 9 boys’ rugby team played The Downs School in their last league match. The Year 9s made a strong start to the match scoring 3 tries in the opening 5 minutes. This dominance continued with the final score being 40-5 to St Bart’s. Player of the match was awarded to Deacon for his excellent all-round performance. Well done to all involved!

Year 10 Rugby

The Year 10 boys’ rugby team played The Downs School in their last league match.  The Downs School were leading at half time, but St Bart’s won the second half with two great tries – one scored by Joe who beat several players in a run down the wing to score in the corner, and one scored by Amos following a strong run by Tristan. Amos kicked brilliantly and scored a very difficult conversion. Final score – Downs 22 St Bart’s 12.

Players of the match were Joe Bell for his running with the ball, and Joe Hill for his tackling.

Senior Rugby

The Senior Rugby Team have reached their third successive U18 Berkshire Cup Final with a 19-0 win over The Downs School last Wednesday. St Bart’s got off to a slow start, repeatedly gifting The Downs territory and possession by giving away penalties, but despite this the St Bart’s defence, which has been excellent all year, stood firm and didn’t give any try scoring opportunities away. However, as soon as St Bart’s managed to get their hands on the ball, their physicality told. A combination of big carries through the middle and then pace out wide gained the opportunities and patience in the red zone, resulted in three tries being scored. The defence continued to stand firm throughout the game. Players of the Match were the second row partnership of Jayden and James, who made a huge amount of tackles and made some really strong carries through the middle.

Elephant on Parade – The Festival of Light

December 19, 2023

The annual Festival of Light has become something of a spectacular Christmas tradition in Newbury. Many of you will have been there on Sunday to see the amazing procession of hundreds of twinkling lanterns travelling through Newbury town centre. In the build up to the event, many schools, community groups and members of the public were busy constructing some amazing structures to parade and, as you would expect, St Bart’s was no exception!

We absolutely LOVE this amazing elephant created in St Bart’s Art Club by talented Year 9 students, Phoebe, Ffion and Gamya. We hope they enjoyed the procession and we thank them for sharing this great image.

Year 8, 9 and Sixth Form Football Update

December 18, 2023

Year 8 Football

Well done the Year 8 girls who took part in the West Berkshire Girls Football Finals at Park House School this afternoon. The B team finished 9th from 14 teams beating St Gabriel’s 4-0. The A team finished 3rd from 14 teams beating Park House to bring home the bronze medals! Well done to all who played.

Year 9 Football

Our Year 9 girls played their final football fixture of the season last Thursday. Our A team won 4-3 against St Gabriel’s in an extremely entertaining match with goals from Jess, Francesca and 2 from Lizzie – this meant we came 3rd overall in the West Berkshire League. Our B team also won 4-0 with an excellent performance against Kennet B, including a hat-trick from Mariella and another goal from Georgia. This meant our B team came 5th overall! A huge congratulations to all players involved, as the conditions were freezing!

U18 West Berkshire Football League

The girls were evenly matched against Kennet School in the final of the U18 West Berkshire Girls’ Football League, with great defending from both sides. Poppy made some fantastic saves and was always a safe pair of hands, giving the team confidence to push up the pitch.

It was 0-0 at half time with all to play for St Bart’s had fresh legs and made regular subs to keep the pace and pressure up. This paid off, with Erin scoring early in the second half, giving the team a boost. St Bart’s kept up the relentless shots on goal and Mya secured a second goal to seal the win. A great team performance and another trophy for the cabinet.
